Puch Brigadier?

I had a coworker buy a 52cm off craigslist last night. He said it was light. From the small jpeg I could see a nice white lugged frame with red headtube but not much else. No suicide brakes.
Is anyone familiar with that model? It will mount a rack - the picture showed one but the seller took it off.

There's a mixte frame on eBay now. That's the sum of my knowledge on them....

Description from eBay:

A nice candy-red austrian Puch ladies mixte frame. model Brigadier. Vintage is around 1973. Frame size is 51cm seat tube(c-to-t), 56cm top tube (virtual c- to -c). This bike was sitting in the basement for the most part of it's life. Some scratches and nicks from storage. All decals are there and in original condition. Frame comes with matching original fork and chromed original steel headset and matching rear Weinmann sidepull brake. Chromed rear dropouts without derailleur hanger. Uses a 26.4cm seatpost and BSA threaded bottom bracket. The bike was originally equipped with Campy cranks, Shimano Dura Ace shifters and front mech, Shimano Crane rear derailleur (That is why i estimate it 73 vintage) Shimano 600 front brake, Dura Ace hubs and Wolber Super Champion tubular rims. Brigadier bikes were also usually equipped with black Brooks saddles. Tubing is Puch Cro-Mo Special, see also sticker on pictures. Puch from Graz was and still is Austrias biggest bicycle manufacturer. Their bikes were sold in the U.S. mainly under the Austro Daimler brand. Puch als equipped pro teams with their fine racing machines. The Brigadier was a mid level model for the casual rider, although equipped with the best parts.

I picked up a 72 Brigadier at Goodwill for $20. It is a nice frame with chromed drops with fender and rack mounts, I would call it a mid range bike, unlike the ebay ad above mine has Suntour derailleurs, Weinmann Vanqueur brakes and steel wheels with knurled braking surface. What's original I don't know, but I would say the frame is close to par with my World Sport.

My coworker brought the bike to work today. Lugged steel frame, the Reynolds sticker is torn up but it looks like 531. Alloy 27" wheels with Normandy high flange hubs. 5 speed freewheel, old style, not ramped.
Suntour GT Luxe RD and Spirit FD. Classic, bulky Suntour ratchet shifters on stem; matrress criss-cross saddle. Crankset with chain guard, plastic dork disk. A number of scuffs on paint that is oxidized - and rust on several clamp bolts. Suicide brake levers with center-pull weinmann brake calipers.
I asked hit to bring the bike by my house for a 2 - 5 hour appointment with degreaser, teflon lube, wheel grease and simi-chrome polish. New shift cables and bar tape should spiffy her up.

Bump. My coworker bought a PUCH I found on craigslist at my prompting. He came over tonight and 4 hours later the masterpiece emerged. It has 531 tubing, and a 100 year sticker. Mattress saddle, high flange Normandy hubs, Regina freewheel, and Weinmann rims that polished to a high shine. The RD is the same Suntour VGT Luxe my Gran Sport came with.

That's weird, I assume the 72 stamped on the seat lug refers to 1972. Mine has that also and is a Brigadier, but is totally different. I have an "Royal" with the 72 stamping that is a butted 531 frame with full dura ace and a Crane RD. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to their production, to me anyway.
Looks like you got your friend a good bike at any rate!

He got a decent lugged steel frame bike (27 lbs) that looks nice and is a good starter. He paid $95 plus $5 for the carbon-look bar tape. Amazing what brillo, degreaser, simichrome, compound, and wax can do.

72 is the angle between the seat tube and top tube.

That bike is an excellent candidate for fixed gear conversion.

OH! I guess I'm going to have to work on dating my fleet of Puchs, I thought I had 2 1972s.

Nick or anyone, do you know when they made the Royal? It has early dura ace, with a crane RD and a 531 DB frameset. One of my favorite bikes btw.

John

I'm familiar with a model called Royal Force made around 1981 or 82 that was pretty high up in the Puch lineup. Can you post some pics?

These arn't the best pics but I post them. Also, after looking at the pic I recall the model is Royal X.
The Crane RD makes me think it's about a 1973.

Nice bike. You're probably in the right ballpark as far as guessing the age. It's in great condition for it's age too.

Is that schrader up front and presta in back?

Yes it is, that's the way I got it. It now has a pair of 700c wheels, both with prestas LOL, barcons and a brooks.

I'm trying to find out how much it is worth as I have someone who wants to buy it. It's white and in decent shape. Any ideas, I can't seem to find one online just like it to compare. I saw one for $99 and one for over $600?? What's the difference?

Thanks

The one asking $600 is crazy.
