Bikes: 71 Chrome Paramount P13-9, 73 Opaque Blue Paramount P15, 74 Blue Mink Raleigh Pro, 91 Waterford Paramount, Holland Titanium x2

Going from memory here...the Continental has tubular forks as opposed to the heavier forged steel forks, aluminum randonneur bars, a front quick release and a slightly higher price!

This would apply to the bike boom era Continentals.

Bikes: '75 Schwinn Paramount P-10, '86 Ritchey Commando, '87 Schwinn Cimarron, '91 Trek 990, '87 Schwinn High Sierra, '73 Schwinn Super Sport, '4? Schwinn New World, '76 Swing Bike.

Varsity had side-pull brakes vs. the Continental's center-pull. (the center-pulls were considered better than the single-pivot side-pulls at that point in time)

Probably variable on the minor details over time, but, for, say, 1975:

Varsity: Steel bars. Side pull brakes. Nutted axles. Forged Ashtabula fork. $129.95.

Conti:Alloy Randonneur handlebars. Center pull brakes. Quick release hubs. Painted tubular fork. $144.95.

From Bob Hufford's SLDB.

Wow. Using Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator, the Continental today would cost $561.21. You could get a heaping helping of nice bike for that today.

From 1960 on: Varsity had flat-bladed forks, Conti had superior tubular forks

1960: Varsity had 8 speeds (15-18-22-25 freewheel) and 26" wheels; Conti had 10 speeds (15-17-19-22-25 freewheel) and 27" wheels; both had sidepull brakes and nutted hubs

By 1962 the Conti had acquired quick-release wheels and centerpull brakes, which continued to distinguish it from the Varsity from then onward (along with the forks, of course, which are the biggest difference between the two models). As far as I know, the frames have been identical at least since 1963, when the Varsity got 27" wheels.
