Bikes: CUSTOM SINGLESPEED

Unkown Steel Road Frame

Hello, Does anyone know if Suntour manufactured steel road frames? I bought a used lugged steel road frame from ebay. I bought it stripped and primed. The person who sold it to me claims it is a Bianchi, highly doubted. There are no Bianchi stamps, but it does have Suntour stamps on the fork ends and rear dropouts.

I'll jump in first on this thread before the experts arrive. I don't believe they made frames but they did make fork tips and dropouts. I have an early '80's Raleigh Supercourse with them.

Japanese Bianchi, perhaps? Pictures, please!

Yep, could be a Japanese Bianchi, I don't know enough to say whether they had Suntour DOs/ends or not. Here's a pic from an '83 catalog, 3 have clearly marked Ishiwata tubing, but can you tell the make of forkends?

Some, but not all of the Jpanese Bianchi used SunTour drops. Most Japanese Bianchi come from the period where embossing the fork crown and/or stay caps were popoular, making identification easier.

Can't tell much without close-ups of the lugs, BB etc... The japanese Bianchis I have come across have either had unlabelled drop-outs or shimano dropouts but that doesn't mean they never had suntour.

It's hard to tell from the pic as it is kinda small and "far away"....I circled part of it in red...it looks like it says something on the seatstay cap...yes? If so, what is it?

I think even the oldest of the Japanese Bianchi's had pump pegs as well...I don't see one, but it may be washed out in the pic. I had a Japanese built Bianchi yeeeeeeeeeears ago, but it did not have Suntour drop-outs...don't think that means a whole bunch, but it's the only real reference I have.

I think it might just be the light in a concave seatstay cap which would be uncharacteristic of the low end japanese bianchis I have seen (which are the ones without any markings).

for some reason the bulgier catalog scans are down at the moment...but if you COULD see that '83 and '84 catalogs that show the Japanese-built Ishiwata frames, you will see at least one model has the scalloped seatstay caps. And that most have a classic semi-sloping fork crown with the letter "B" engraved on the tops.
