Is it blasphemy

To use a 105 FD with a Campy crankset and chainrings or will it even work? Want to know before I bid.

It'll work. I don't want to get into blasphemy right now.

It will work and yes, it's proabably blasphemous depending on the application. The Madonna del Ghisallo will put in a bad word for you with the Man and you'll be damned for eternity. Same for all you other guys using Shimano stuff on Italian bikes

Oh but I beg pardon this will be on a Schwinn, so is that such a blasphemous act that I will be eternally cast on to a sulfurous pile of smoking elctro forged frame slag? Can I redeem my cursed self by using all campy or do the unthinkable and use all Shimano?

Hmmm...I guess the Madonna needn't know then. Personally I'd use Shimano unless it were a high-end model like the Paramount. But if you're just looking to use what you have on hand I guess it doesn't matter. All too often my "cheap" bikes start costing a small fortune when I build them out "just right" so I'm all for saving a few bucks where possible.

Depends on what I can get this campy set for. Usually at the last second someone swoops in and offers some ridiculous amount for what I'm looking for and I like you want to build it nice but not over spending to build it out to the max

A Campy FD is much better than a Shimano one, so while it's not blasphemy, you really should get a Campy FD for it. Even the lower end Mirage would be fine.

Bikes: 1959 Capo Modell Campagnolo; 1960 Capo Sieger (2); 1962 Carlton Franco Suisse; 1970 Peugeot UO-8; 1982 Bianchi Campione d'Italia; 1988 Schwinn Project KOM-10;

I have the converse situation, i.e., my Bianchi has a Shimano outer chainring (the only brand I could find in 50T / 130mm) and the original NR front derailleur.

I've been casually shopping for a groupset for my Centurion Cinelli Equipe frameset. By spec, it was equipped with Campagnolo and Ofmega components. However, I like the looks of the early Dura Ace group, and a couple of the Suntour groups. An Italian built frame distributed by a Japanese corporation. What ever shall I do?!?!

Your bike will grow up very conflicted. Think tempura con bucatini.

I bought a nice Japanese bike from a CraigsListing that had a hodgepodge of components -- mainly Shimano, but also French (Maillard rear hub and freewheel), a few other European bits; and the jewel was a Campy SR crankset. Riding it home from the train station on a 95-degree day in the city I got a flat, and I figured that the gods of ethnic cycle purity were angry. So I sold the crankset (too long for me), gave the wheels away (weren't very nice), and I believe the bike looks much happier. The rebuild is going totally Japanese.

OH THE HUMANITY I CAN'T TAKE IT. Think I'll just make it all shimano except for the crankset and if I can't get the zeus. I may just stay with the PERISH THE THOUGHT Ashtabula

I only dropped in on this thread to destroy the spambot, but I wanted to thank you guys. There are so many other parts of the forums full of bickering, petty arguments, and inappropriate posts. It's nice to see members shooting the breeze about bikes, having fun, and making each other laugh.

Cheers,

Brian

p.s. What will this mean to C&V 20-30 years from now?

You can't put an Asshtabula on a regular threaded bb

That's not so bad. I just finished putting on brand new Super Record Brake levers with NOS Campy gum hoods on my Professional and then wrapped the bars with cat eye cloth tape - even though I have six rolls of Velox tape (I'm trying to use up the cat eye stuff).

So, throw me in a briar patch

The OP said he's refitting a Schwinn -- probably has an Ashtabula now, and he's thinking of using that conversion kit to install an English threaded BB into a Schwinn "big hole."

To Stringbreaker: there are a lot of moderately-priced Japanesey cranks available on eBay, some are even Campy clones, like the Sugino Mighty Competitions. I think that hubris/sacrilege would be totally avoided (though a rabbi should be consulted about the specific laws that apply) if one used a Nippon Campy clone with S 105 FD.
