Latest is a Univega Gran Turismo.Tektro canty brakes,Ritchey bars,27" Weinmann rims.Suntour.Triple Sugino.Obviously well loved and maintained.Truth is I have to stop taking every bike I find at the town dump or else where.Like all of us,I am amazed at what people throw out.Instead of Goodwill,Salvation Army, tag sale, people just insist on contributing to our landfill issues.I once found a Raleigh Carlton on a front yard that nobody wanted! It was a tag sale left over and nobody wanted it for $10.I rode it for a year in all it's Worksop/Campy/Broooks class and glory and passed it on to a great friend of mine.I'll post what I collect this weekend.Stay with the hunt!

New bike again. I must stop going to the dumpster, breaks my heart. Found a mint peugot mixte three days ago. Left it, what can one do?

Then again I found this one yesterday. Could not leave it, lugged and all. I wish there was other vintage bike lowers to share. Sorry for small pix, I`ll try to deal with it soon. This is the third mixte I kept, all dumpster finds. Gave away some, but nobody really want them.

Wow, what lucky dump do you live near? If it were me, there is no way I could leave a good old bike behind. Even if I couldn't use it, a quick 'fixer upper' ad on Cl for a sale really cheap or give it away to someone who would be thrilled with a free bike.

badmother 05-30-08 07:24 AM

In the last three years I supplied bikes to alot of refugees (about 100 of them) and also other peopel I know like students who do not get much support from home. I often give bikes to peopel I do not know, theyr friends ask and i find them one. A lot of peopel want a bike, but they want them repaired for free, I tell them they must do it themselves.

Got a nice Nikishi mtb here that I do not need. The guy I gave it to put the wheels on a newer cheaper bike that he liked more, so no the frame is back with me. If somebody would pick them up I could supply, especially in the spring and summer, less in the winter.

The BUT is that I do not know anyone wwho understand and like old /vintage bikes, and there is a limit to how many I need. Think I`we got 8 at the moment and the same for my son. I sometimes think I spend more time working on them than riding them and that is not what I want.

Here's a mixte I pulled out of the dumpster a year ago, cleaned the heck out of it and put some single-speed parts on it that were lying around from when I bought my Peugeot( and immediately put gears back on it--I live on a big hill). I sold it on CL to a very happy lady in the fall. I posted these pics on another thread, but here it is again in all its post-dumpster glory:

Great bike, great pix. What sort of nuts cases throw them into the dumpster?

pdxpeugeot 05-31-08 09:03 AM

You guys are killin' me with the Mixte finds! A mixte in "needs fixing-up" condition can go for $100 on CL in my neck of the woods. Actually, at $100, the bike would sell in a day (I know because I tried to buy one of these and fifteen people had already called ahead of me).

Someone needs to start a "Save the Mixtes!" campaign.

pdx - I love Mixte frames... I am building one up and have another great one at our shop.

We have what I think is a 1964 (?) Peugeot Mixte at our shop (a donation) with the very rare white Delrin Simplex shifters and full white Delrin hoods... we'll probably be selling it for more a little more than 100.00 as the bike is in stellar shape and all the Simplex bits are in primo condition.

Ah jeez, you're making me jealous. When I get done with fixing up my wifes bike, then I get done fixing up an old ten-speed Free Spirit (for a friend, or for sale) and THEN I get done turning a very roughly worn Lotus frame into a fixie...maybe then I'll start looking for a Mixte to turn into my tourer.

Your ship wouldn't happen to be located in Portland, OR? :innocent:

karmat 06-02-08 12:55 PM

pdxpeugeot, yeah I sold that mixte on CL last year for nearly $200. I had put about $50 in it but that's not too bad. :) I'm also in PDX, you'll note. Those things go for real money here.

Hi everyone this is my first post on these forums, the seem great.

I picked up this bad boy at the dump a few days ago, I know it's a Huffy from the 70's, but not much else. In good condition, and although Huffy bikes aren't exactly the most reputable, it is fun to tool around town with.

(Those are after I cleaned it up/changed the seat/ put on tape)

I also picked up a Univega Gran Turismo a few weeks ago, haven't really touched it yet.

A pretty cool old find, but it needs a lot of work. Currently seatless. I like that it still has the Santa Rosa cyclery sticker from 20+ years ago!

brandenjs 06-03-08 02:54 PM

That Univega is a nice find. I like the bar end shifters, those are worth the trouble to bring it home. I don't think I've seen seat tube mounted shifters like on that Huffy..

They are definitely a trip lol. I keep on thinking that I can't shift at all because I don't remember to look down

brandenjs 06-04-08 06:53 AM

I just put a set of bar ends on my Schwinn and I really love em. It's very easy to get used to after a couple of rides. Have fun cleaning and riding them..

I just called the local landfill and asked about dumped bikes. He says they get lots, and that they either go straight into the scrap metal bin or in with the rest of the trash and NO I'm not allowed to take a look. :(

really? my dump has a recycle center where people can bring bikes, skis, tvs, and computers. And you can come in and grab anything for free.

Nothing for it then, - you'll have to sneak in when they aren't looking.
