Went to a local metal recycling place today to drop off some stuff, asked about bikes... yes they had some. I didn't finish getting through the pile before they closed (not a big pile, just buried and tangled with pipes and other metal detritus) so I'm going back in the morning to close the deal.

So far: handlebars with good looking XT shifters/brake levers; a 1980's stumpjumper frame, two or three mixte frames/bikes; whole bunch of hubs (apparently it is a current fad with the metal thieves to cut all the spokes then make off with the hubs?! all sorts of hubs in there with spoke ends all dangly and whatnot); a nicely painted Peugeot road frame with the rear dropouts pushed together, not sure if this is salvageable :(

When I asked how much they wanted he said they would have to weigh it first

Find out who the scrap dealer is. I'm sure it's not too far from the dump.

Assuming this is some type of municipal operation, a few well placed calls and maybe an appearance before your city council should produce a result. Drop the word "green" several times; mention gas prices, pollution, fitness, etc..... Maybe that'll loosen up the bike recovery effort.

Of course you may get asked to co-ordinate the additional effort to separate and control the bike recovery operation.....

Just got these two Schwinns off of Craigslist for free.

The Ladies Traveler was built October 23, 1964.
The Mens Blue Suburban was built ten years later, in October of 1974.
The lights still work on both of them. The Traveler is missing the odometer.

I found this bike outside the dumpster at my work.. I work at a park and people leave all sorts of stuff there, usually nothing good but today there was good stuff!

I know nothing about this bike, I did some searching and am not sure what it's worth. It's in pretty good shape, just needs some brakes, new tires/tubes, and a tune up of the gears and it's ready to rock!

Pompiere 06-10-08 06:04 AM

Nice bike for the price. Kabukis have a unique lug in that aluminum is cast around the tube ends to form the lug. That is why they need the expanding wedge seatpost, the lug doesn't flex enough to use the normal binder bolt. They're not light, but they aren't as heavy as a Varsity. If you put some alloy wheels on, you can shed a lot of the excess weight. I have a Kabuki Super Speed from the early 70's. I would guess that yours may be slightly newer, based on different decals. By about 1980, they dropped the Kabuki name and sold them as Bridgestones.

Pair of Sunshine "Gyromaster" hubs laced with DT stainless to Mavic G40 clincher rims with DT stainless spokes, true and smooth, 7 spd Sachs freewheel... but no quick releases :(

Miele Alfa. The guys who were about to throw it in the bin at the dump laughed when I told them I wanted it.

The fun part is when looking at it the first time I recognised your garden from the pix :). I had scrolled to the right to see pix full size, so poster was not visable on my screen.

Tell me about the bartape. Can I use long strips of skin (got two hides lying around) or is it padded or treated in any way?

ozneddy 06-13-08 03:49 AM

Picked up a Raliegh men,s/ boy,s bike from the tip today (the tip workers save bikes for me) is almost identical to the "Schwinn Suburban" that "tallymonster" has in his pic,s in his post above, I have a bad headcold ,so will post pics as soon as I feel better !

mastershake916 06-13-08 04:15 AM

I don't have pics, but a nice mid-school GT mach one, pretty much only missing wheels, and a cheapo bmx frame and fork. I saw the GT sticking half-way out of a recycling can.

My fish pond will be famous... :D

That's 5 layers of cloth and 3 coats of amber shellac with a little cord at the ends to finish things off.

A neighbor that flea markets had this bike minus the seat . He was going to take the air pump and generator off and pitch the bike. I ask him how much ? The price was pocket change, I paid him and took the bike. It has a head badge that says Seko and is marked made in germany it has 28x1 1/2 wheels and rod brakes I have spent hours on the net and found that name once in german it has a sturmey-archer three speed dated 56 since I has no collectors value that I could find. I had a friend spray can it retro-red metalic painted the fenders antique white and the chain guard and rack black (he is good with a spray can)changed the rear sprocket to a 22 tooth sprocket new chain and nuts and screws, and am waiting on new brake pads from harris, got it back together today and rode it to the store for some milk and donuts for the kids I will post a picture of it painted when I get some batteries for the camera

Not the coolest, but still a nice catch: an '89 Cannondale SM400 (bottom of the line) mtb. It was on the curb next to tree branches, a minibike frame and other waste, but aside from missing the front wheel and the brake straddle cable being a little wonky, this is in amazingly good condition for an mtb. A few scratches, very little rust, no cracks visible in the aluminum frame, and the SIS shifts well. No sign of chain or cable lube though, so there might be wear issues.

badmother 06-18-08 08:25 PM

Sorry, no pix (so maybe I should keep quiet), but I need to tell..

Next to the dumpster today was eight bikes waiting for new owners. I picked two (since I was already carrying my dumpsterfind mixte to ride it). One small womans MTB right size for ome of the refugees.

The other one a mint "Dutch style bike", womans steptroug. Dark red paint w gold letters. White wall tires, almost full chaincase (-5cm), 3 speed hub, sprung (not brooks) broad seat, basket, lights (dynamo), rack, chrome stem and bars.

Some minor surface rust on stem and bars, chain and small chain to go innside gearhub.

What it does to me is I feel sick if I for many days in a row can not go there and look. I also has got wayyy to many bikes, but a lot of peopel need them, and it feels sooo wrong not to try to put the two together. I`d need a shrink if I had to stop going:eek::D

My dad rang up and said that there was a Norman with drop bars at the recycling centre attached to his local dump and was I interested. I said "Buy it" and transfered some money to him poste haste. He went the next buy and brought it for $15.00. It is a Norman Invader and from what little info I have been able to find was made with Reynolds 531 and aimed at the British clubman. Here are the pictures of the bike at his place. I hopefully will get it later this week (he lives 100 km from me).
