That is a beautiful bike. And it really wants you to take the water bottles out before you photograph it next time.

Love the cockpit now with the Nitto 0degree stem, Soma Hwy1 bars, and 7sp shifters.
I have that stem on my Rossin. It is fantastic and looks great on your Schwinn. I like the bottle cages, too.

Thanks!
It started as a $70 frameset off ebay. Some parts from an '89 Schwinn 564, some new parts, and a cobbled together compact crank all make it a bast to ride.

Ok, dudes. The GP4000SIIs came in today.

The before pic:

The after pic:

Tires comparisons: since we're talking retro-roadies, my highly scientific methodology blended old (HRM vs power meter, which I don't even have) with new (Strava's power estimates, which we all know is highly accurate /s). Tires were inflated to 70psi front and rear on both sets of tires.

Anyway, I tried to keep my HR in the 160-170 range, averaged 163bpm with the Vittoria Rando2s and 164bpm with the Conti GP4000SIIs. Strava's power estimates for the Rando2 ride averaged 177 watts, and for the GP4000SIIs, 195 watts.

Ugh. 18 MEASLEY WATTS! you may be thinking.

Take note that, when I got back, I realized I must have bumped the brake caliper on installation... my rear brake was dragging the rim on the GP test. So I'll be generous and say that the GP4000SIIs provided at least 20 watts improvement.

Also, they're black, so that makes it worth paying $70 more for them.

I think the black definitely looks better, and that was a pretty good looking bike to begin with. Plus, there aren't a whole lot of equipment changes that will give you 20 watts for under $150.

They do live up to the billing--I saw a roughly 2mph improvement on one of my regular routes that seems to correlate with the expected 30-40 watt savings.

Yeah, I built one in a similar fashion. Mine is a Rossin, and I got if off of Craigslist as a fixie.

Looks very fast. What's the story on the fork?

The fork is carbon aftermarket as the original did not, unfortunately, come with it. I am "in the market" for a period correct Columbus fork, as I just managed to score some Gen IV 5 pivot Campy Delta's that I am cleaning up/restoring and this may take the bike down a more traditional build in the future replete with pantographed De Rosa stem, cranks etc. On the fence. However, the fork was a good choice for the geometry of the frame and I am happy with it.

Thanks. I raced in the 90's while the Scott LeMond Drop-ins were still UCI legal and like to spec my bikes with them. These, however, are a different, rare, beast. Modolo 6 Q Even Anatomic handlebars came out as an answer to Scott's bars I am told and I like them so much more for being in the drops for long rides. I found them while "trollin' Ebay" one night and have not found another pair yet.

Here's another angle that shows the anatomic bend that the Scott's didn't have:

Smaller photo I found of the Modolo bar:

I completely agree. And they are successful because of the all-black anodized rims. A raw metal (silver) brake track would greatly lessen the visual impact (contrast). Hot bike.

Just thought I'd repost this one now that it's all sorted out. Replaced the awful Sora brifters, but on some new Campagnolo Scirocco's, chain, and cassette. All the "resistance issues are cleared up and this one flies. Set a PR on my 25 mile route with it right after getting it sorted out. That PR now belongs to my Maillot Jaune but just barely.

I concur. The visual weight of the rims is mitigated by the tire sidewall color and complimented by the group color.

For those in NY:
"The dark ambiance of the charcoal rim surfaces in backlit by the tawny shoulders of the vintage-era tires, with a bold brush stroke circling heavily around the husky broad span of the crankset."

And as they say in NC:
"That's a cool bike, man. Why pink?"

And in California:
"Get away from my bike or I'll cut you."
"Uh, sorry, ma'am."
