dumb newbie question, but is it somewhat as simple as buying brifters, or do the dérailleurs have to be anything special??

I would love to do this to my 88 Iron Man Master, it has full 600 shimano tricolor grouping.

shifters- 8spd Record with 10spd internals
crank- c-record with 10spd rings
FD- chorus 10
RD-centaur 10 (selected for alloy body)
cassette- record 10 12-25 (want a 12-23 but the price was right)
brakes- veloce monoplanar (selected for modern cartridge pads)
not pictured- record 10 chain (couldnt resist hollow pins)

If it is 7 or 8sp tricolor you can look for 600/RSX brifters, or you can get new Shimano 2200 series or Sora brifters (I believe these still will do 8sp).

An 88 Master would be 2x7 600 tricolor. You can basically buy 7-sp RSX, 7-sp Sora, or 8-sp Sora, RSX, RX100, 105, or 600, and they'll work just fine. However, you may notice a wee bit of FD chain rub while cross-chaining with 8-sp STI's, as the angle of the FD parallelogram changed a bit in the move to 8-sp.

I'm actually rehabbing an 88 Master right now, and will use either a 105 set or an RX100 set of STI's. That's all I'm doing to the bike. The hubs are too pretty and work too well to swap in 8-sp compatible wheels. The rear wheel on that Master can be converted to an 8/9/10 hub, too, by the way.

Oh, and in it's final incarnation....(remember, I said final)....an '88 Ironman Carbon, STI'd and Livestrong theme. I've shown it with Campy Ergo and 2x10 downtube shifting (DA). The Ergo's need rebuilding, and I picked up these wheels and some Ultegra stuff, so it's 2x10 Ultegra rolling Mavic Cosmic Elites. Can't afford a Livestrong Madone, so I built my own Livestrong edition bike. Nice link to another 7-time winner of a big event with a bike in it, Dave Scott. Sorry for the pic quality. I'm no shutterbug.

Finally got her rideable!

Haven't put my pedals on yet, just some temporary old ones to ride it around the block.

Unfortunately, i wasn't careful enough while taking photos & it blew over (damn kansas wind!), scratching my new bar tape & a bar plug. Oh well, she was far from perfect to begin with, frame has several different colors of blue touch up paint & "patina" on the chrome but they are only original once. I did use a NOS dura-ace BB, an aerodynamic Campy seat post, & a very cool "Pinarello" pantographed stem to top her off.

Looking forward to riding her lots but won't be able to for a few weeks due to moving house. Should be fun & she fits me perfectly based on a very short ride.

1986/87 Schwinn Circuit from ebay. Came almost completely stock and spotty surface rust. My buddy and I sanded down the troubled spots and he sprayed model enamel paint (black is easy). Took a chance and used acrylic clear coat. Holds up okay, but definitely not meant for vehicle applications!

Main frame is Columbus SL tubing with Tange Aero fork and chromed stays. We had fun and simi-chromed the snot out of the head tube lugs.

Front shifting from small to big is dicey without a ramped chainring so that will be my next purchase. Need to soft pedal to shift, but I can't race until next season so no biggie.

Rear shifting is perfect. SRAM makes quality stuff and pretty cheap as far as new parts go compared to Shimano and Campy. Their RD design alone is worth it.

Huge pet peeve: One of the crank dust cap is missing. Anyone have a spare and won't put a ridiculous price tag on it? :o

Thanks, took a long time to piece it together. And yeah I'm just replacing the rings. The Sprint crankset is too sweet.

are you running 8spd levers with 10spd as well?

are builds are going to be VERY close. i have 8spd record levers controlling 10spd and white tape on the way. i was looking for a campy aero post but couldnt find one long enough so i am settling for a miche. i also subbed the dual pivot records for monoplanars (i have a soft spot for them)

the thomson is probably a better post, but i need some setback and the miche should complement the build very well. i hear they are a little heavy, but very nice.
