mountaindave,

A query anent your Ross Eurotour bicycle -

I have no knowledge of Ross bicycles but noted that the frame looks like it might be German. That combination of the Agrati bulge-formed head with that fork crown and those braze-ons is reminiscent of some German bikes. Is its chainset a Thun?

Almost looks like it could be a Kalkhoff.

Thanks for any information.

Bikes: More than I care to admit

Ross was an American company. As I understand, it farmed low-end stuff out, but I know not to where.

Thanks very much mountaindave.

Ran across this example near identical to yours. Wonder if there is any useful information on that oval transfer near the top of the seat tube.

Did your machine arrive with this transfer as well?

Our T-Mar is likely familiar with this contractor

If mine had that decal, it is now covered up by reflective tape out on by the PO. My head tube is all worn down to metal under the front basket support But I love the basket.

1989 Eddy Merckx Century

Got a good price on this on Ebay. Showed evidence of a prior loving owner but I suspect the last used it as a fixie. The chrome fork and chain stays were horribly pitted, shifter bosses were smashed up, RD hanger needed the threads chased. I ended up painting the fork, leaving the good condition chrome on the crown exposed, and painting the NDS chain stay. Luckily the DS chain stay had a protector so it is still in good shape. Built it with mix of Campy 8 speed parts and throughly enjoyed the maiden voyage today.

Before:

Last pic is from the eBay add. There was a regular nut and bolt in the seat post clamp and a rag stuffed into the gap of the "in too far" aero seat post.

1989 EM Century

After:

I used rattle can auto paint for the chain stay and fork as well as some touch up on the frame. Used a black sharpie for other spots. Not a show bike but IMO good enough to ride without disapproving looks from the cognoscenti.

Thanks! I didn't do close ups because, while I'm pleased with the result, it doesn't stand up to a less than a couple of feet away inspection.

That's what I call a good "five foot bike." Looks great from five feet away... less so up close.

Ah, so this is the machine with the OFMEGA crank to pedal fusion problem. Great to see that leverage won the day.

Had to cut the body off the pedal, but after that it was all pipe wrench and leverage, hehe.,,,,BD

From: 700 Ft. above sea level.

Bikes: Not as many as there were awhile ago.

Well, this one should have been done about a month ago but it's still a couple years ahead of some of my other projects. Still have some tweaking to do to the saddle and bars but it's definitely a keeper.

Before:

As of this morning and it rides GREAT:

'87 Cannondale

This was listed on eBay, it was posted on the forum in another thread when someone was asking about options for a small road bike for their wife (or girlfriend) - I think it was posted as a joke, since in the ad it did look like somebody might've been using a dumpster find for an art project! But I just couldn't help myself, it was the right size for my wife (48cm) and after a bit of research things seemed to fit the description. Being in Newcastle PA (45 mins from my mother's house) made delivery quite easy, not to mention fitting in with being a factory custom job, and I brought it back to Dublin when I visited recently.

Before:

After:

Only the seatpost, pedals, bars, frame & fork were unchanged. The rest is Ultegra 6700 and some other tasteful upgrades.

I can confidently say there's not another bike like this in Ireland!

Nicely done. I had one just like it but it was too small for me.

Wow. That is one crazy custom factory paint job. I've never seen that at all. It does scream 80's though doesn't it? Makes me want to put on some Depeche Mode. But strangely, it looks perfectly modern and not at all awkward with the updated parts. I suppose it's because those bikes were ahead of their time. Nice job.

I was at first quite concerned that it was a fake, because of the wild paint, weird serial number, internally-routed brake cable and a lack of anything exactly like it in all the Cannondale catalogs - but the components were all period-correct, the decals correct, the 1987 catalog did mention factory-custom paint as an option with the label "competition" sprinkled around on what looked like special-order models; and it was in Newcastle PA when the factory is not a million miles away in Bedford PA. When I received it and got to take a firsthand look, the paint is really fantastic (for it's age) and the internal routing is not a hack, both look factory-done. If someone did "fake" it as a Cannondale, they went to a lot of trouble and made a really nice bike out of it!

Most importantly, the missus is chuffed and can't wait to get out on it - the "prime directive" and ultimate end-goal in this build (and any build!) - so all's good.
