Claud Butler 50's lugless frame

Since my Raleigh frame snapped recently at the seat stays and chainstay

I was offered this lugless 50's Claud Butler frame by a friend

It's handy being tall with short mates I've just got to find some forks to suit it and get building it.

I think a chrome fork would go nicely, unless you're willing to repaint another one to match.

I have a 1948 fillet-brazed Claud Butler, and the fork crown is a twin-plate model that's pretty cool. Pics below.

It's a 22"/56cm (c-t) frame, which is actually a bit small for me. I'd trade it for a 58/59cm touring bike if you have one handy.

Anything wrong with using the Raleigh's fork (stripped or repainted)?

Ah rats Neal, I don't have a touring bike, plus, the Claud is too large by +/- 5cm for me. I love these old British bikes...

Take care,
Kevin

They might fit but I'm sure I have a chrome pair at the back of the shed, I'll try them for size first

Well it's been a while, I was trying to find period parts but got fed up waiting and just built it anyway or it would have just sat there pining for the road.

Spec:
Claud Butler 531 lugless steel frame [mid fifties]
Miche cranks,
Normandy Hubs on Mavic Record du Monde de l'Heure sprint rims with tubs,
Brooks Swift saddle,
Nitto B123 steel bars and Nitto Pearl stem,
Campagnolo brake levers,
and a Hi-Gear brake because it was the only one in the shed with enough drop

That is drop-dead gorgeous! I love Clauds (Got six of them including a 1935 lugged Super-Velo!) and I used to have a brazed lugless CB Tour Anglais years ago. Sweet ride, I've been looking for another one in my size (21 to 22.5") at the right price ever since! Yours looks brilliant.

Bikes: Many

There is one here locally I have been hoping I would have another shot at. It had number plate tabs brazed on the frame tubes.

I know this is a very old post, but for the record: Claud and Geoffrey Butler WERE related...just not on the best of terms during some periods of their lives.

Cousins, I believe? As I heard it, Geoffrey disapproved of some of Claud's more colourful escapades!

Brothers, so the story goes. Here's a quote excerpted from the CR List archives:
"...But recently I met a fellow
online who seems to know a lot about many bikes who says they were definitely
brothers. So I asked if it were documented anywhere. He said yes and
pointed me
to a book which I have now obtained from the VCC about Frederick H Pratt,
Cycling Engineer, compiled by Alvin Smith. He interviewed Fred's son
Noel for
much of the information in the book. Fred (and Geoffrey) had worked at
Claud's shop before and during the war. After the war, things went a
little crazy
around the shop and many employees left. Fred left to open his own shop in
Salfords, and Geoffrey left to open his shop in Croydon. Fred was married to
Joan Butler, who was Claud and Geoffrey's sister by the way. "

I stand corrected - and pleased to learn more! Thanks for adding more info.
