This is not from Sheldon's site and the subject probably seems simple to most of you but for a newbie such as me to have a cycling guru such as Sheldon give me a reply and agree was a great thrill..
We'll miss you my friend...

What amazed me about Sheldon was what a "Renaissance" man he was. Bicycles were probably his primary focus, but he was also very into photography, website design, classical music, and who knows what all?
How did he find the time for it all?
The world needs more like him!
Rest in peace.

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa
For me it would be the article he and Mike Kone wrote on pricing. I can't tell
how many times I refer to that just to get an idea what a bike is (was) worth. Sure
the article is dated but it gives me a good idea of the bike.
the other would be this:
https://sheldonbrown.com/wheelbuild.html
without it I'd probably be doomed to buying boutique wheels or used ones off ebay.

The Secret of Cycling Success!
The Secret of Cycling Success!

Probably the greatest personal inspiration I can think of who encouraged me back into my current obsession with bikes and back to SERIOUS DAILY cycling, after years away from anything resembling regular cycling. His website was always a virtual encyclopedia of data on every subject and an essential first stop starting point, always bookmarked.
I followed his Health Journal contributions for well over a year. Always optimistic, he was an inspiration to anyone suffering from even temporary health or injury issues. My younger brother, a type-two diabetic who had NEVER been interested in cycling, spent months of the past year in a convalescent hospital following his own surguries. He also began to follow Sheldon's reports and began to exchange emails with him as well. So, Sheldon has touched a great many lives in ways one would not even expect.
Sheldon will always be well though of ... much appreciated ... and long remembered.

i jam my thumbs up and back into the tubes. this way i can point my fingers straight out in front to split the wind and attain an even more aero profile, and the usual fixed gear - zen - connectedness feeling through the drivetrain is multiplied ten fold because my thumbs become one with the tubing.

I, for one, hope he's not resting at all. I hope he's now freed of the shackles growing old weighs one down with. I hope he's out riding whatever passes for a bicycle in the afterlife.

I used Sheldon's instructions to build my first (and every) set of wheels. I printed it out to make sure I would have a copy to use in the years to come.
I had built ONE wheel as a teenager working in a LBS. Sure, it was lousey, but it went on some Francojunk and I was proud as could be because I actually built it.
Fast forward about 36 years and I got the urge to do it again, only I wanted it to be perfect. Well, perfection wasn't exactly evident on the first set, but things got better with each set I built.
I couldn't have done it without you, Sheldon.

This post was in the 50+ thread, and I like it so much:
Grant at Rivendell had this to say, and I re-post it here, for as usual with Grant, it's as well written as Sheldon's stuff.
Quote:
"I got a call at home early this morning, and now that it's up on the Harris site, it's okay to acknowledge it here.
Everybody knows it by now, and thousands of words have been written about it by now. It should be hundreds of thousands. Even if hundreds of thousands, it wouldn’t approach the number of words Sheldon wrote in his enviable, concise, straight to the point style that everybody ought to learn by and I wish I could do as well.
One thing you will read, or have read many times by now, is “there will never be another Sheldon,” and it wasn’t just his hats and genius clownish demeanor, or his yellow-and-blue website, or his Sheldon Brownish knowledge of everything about bikes, from every era, and spilling over into realms and fields far beyond bicycles.
Music, acting, cameras, websites…whatever Sheldon was interested in he became expert at, but unlike many experts who flaunt it and use it to make those with less knowledge feel stupid, Sheldon was a humble educator.
Is there anything better to be? I think there isn't. Is there anybody who has helped more people, solved more problems, and contributed more enthusiasm and knowledge about bikes to more people? Nobody else is even close.
Sheldon died, and in our little bicycle world, news doesn’t get any bigger or any sadder than that.

His Hetchins page.
I once emailed him a compliment on that bike, as a rather transparent pretext for asking a question about my bike project. He was very helpful.
Also use his gear calculator a lot.
His braking article got me to switch from mostly rear braking to mostly front.
Sad to see him go.
