Here is my new favorite vintage ride. It is a Nishiki Prestige I purchased as a frame. Ser #WG00970. Tange 2 frame. I put all Shimano 600 components - friction shifting. Mavic Open Pro wheels mated to Shimano 600 ex hubs. So far, so good. |
Is T-mar still monitoring these posts? Has he/she ever posted the database of serial numbers to a website or blog or ? It doesn't seem like this thread is active anymore.

I think T-Mar looks at the thread every so often. The best thing is to post a picture up of your bike looking at the right side of the bike, like with the chain, also take pictures of anything that has writing like the handlebars etc and maybe some of the guys here can shed some light on it |

I inherited this bike from my stepmom, she thinks it from the 7os....it has a really cool frame- the top bar is 2 thin tubes instead one tube. SunTour is imprinted on a lot of the metal parts. Something is imprinted in between the chain rings, I think "Sport"? |

Here is a photo of the Chain side of Ladies Nishiki- I just read that's what u need, and a picture at the rear dropout with G5 and G577 stamped on them. I looked again at the imprint on the part near the chain ring (the Rear Derailleur?). It says Sun Tour for sure, then it looks like it says "Spirt" |
Finally, I've taken photos of my Nishiki. I think you'll see immediately that it's pretty old--just look at those handlebars. Of all the pictures of the Nishikis here & on their Giant website, the PDFs showing the exact model of bike I have, none have these old-fashioned handlebars. My bike also has one of those metal framed saddlebags you can attach to the back axle. That thing weighs more than the bike itself! I have only been able to ride this bike once because the back tire was almost flat. When I tried to put air in it, the embolism created by the tube poking through the sidewall exploded. Hi all, I've got a Nishiki that has a double set of numbers and was just wondering if anyone knew what the second set indicate? The first set are the usual - CD15132, which I assume from the database to be Canadian '84 (the D=4 and I'm not clear on how you know if it's '74 or '84 but it looks too pristine to be '74 lol so my guess is '84) The second set of numbers are right below the first and look thus: 4 008 770 and this same string is also in tiny little numbers on the rim with/near UKAIRIM 27x1¼ w/o.
Any ideas why the extra numbers? Cheers and great thread!! |

One more: Nishiki Prestige, serial # WE17702
Tange 2 tubeset and fork, purchased as frame/fork only (well, along with a Sugino SP-K seatpost, unidentified headset, and Suntour downtube friction shifters nicely fitted to the brazed-on bosses, maybe LD-3750). Seller tells me it came with gold anodized 700c Araya rims, Sugino VP crankset (110bcd), Suntour Cyclone derailleurs and Suntour Superbe brakes (47-57mm reach) plus levers...all of which he appropriated for his comparably more dimunitive frame when he passed off this 25" (c-t-t) metallic blue-green Tange 2 gem to me. Very nice! I have a Schwinn Paramount 50th Anniversary that had full Sante group. The white paint always made me think of 80s yuppies with pastel sweaters around their necks, but they are good components. The Paramount is a 1988. ahhh, thanks! After seeing "k=usa pre 1985" I ignored the rest of the decoding because I knew it was built later. lol
and the sante has been great so far. nice crisp shifts! already put a couple hunderd miles on the bike and I'm really loving it! |
Nishiki Sebring
I have a Nishiki Sebring G0383. serial number 3566485. I bought the bike in 89' from a young guy in Clearwater florida and had it ever since. It has fallen in disrepair and am now rebuilding it.

Here's my 83 International, KC s/n. Converted to 700's, since I didn't have any 27inch tires. The bike shop only carries blackwalls in stock, and I didn't feel like paying freight to order them. I also switched to Suntour Blue Line RD/FD since I had a matching set. The RD on the bike was an Altus C-10(aka:mostly steel) Original was Cyclone M-II. It looks better in the pic than it is, but it rides very nicely. Kind of light and responsive, yet non twitchy.,,,,BD

I've noticed the photos here end up disappearing after a while, so I uploaded photos of the bike to Flickr. Serial number is CF 01309. Crank is Tourney (double chain rings). edit: I've taken the bike apart and have found some more info (photos on Flickr updated too): Rear derailleur is Shimano 600 with date code AF Front derailleur is Shimano 60 with date code AE Rims are stamped with "UKAI 27 x 1 1/4 w/o LA" (think 'LA' is a date code, not sure what w/o means) Hubs are stamped 'Shimano' with date code AF Rear wheel has five cogs Cranks are Tourney (Shimano?) stamped with '165' (165mm) and 'Japan 76.6' (no idea what 76.6 means) edit again!: I looked up the Shimano date codes and AF and AE refer to 1976 ("A"), June ("F") and May ("E"). And the '76.6' on the cranks is also on the stem - I assume it means 1976, June which would go with the other date codes. So, I'm now pretty convinced the bike is a 1976, not a 1986. Still have no idea what material the frame is made from...and still hoping it's 4130! Does anyone know what models of Nishiki MTBs where available in 1984 and 1985 in Canada?
I found an MTB frame, no forks or components. The frame was painted and there are no decals. Welded, not lugged like most of the road bikes. The rear dropouts are stamped SHIMANO SFR. Serial number on the BB is: CD 00230 If it is a Nishiki frame, then Canadian market 1984. I cannot find any catalogs. Thanks for any help to identify possible models. |

http://velospace.org/node/36124 Is it possible that your serial number is "CE 01 061"? In which case it is a Canadian market from 1985. IMHO, your bike appears to be a mid or late 1980s. I think Nishiki's first MTBs were made in 1983. If 1985 I think it should have bullmoose bars, as you stated in a later post. |
T-Mar, I have another Canadian MTB to add to the database. Nishiki Carrera womens MTB serial number: CF03 218. Therefore 1986. "Designed by NORCO" Some of the component are 1986 and some are 1987. Many or the components are the same as on the 1987 Colorodo, as listed in the 1987 catalogue. I know there ia a Carrera road bike in the 1983 catalogue, but this is a womens mountain bike frame. There are no lugs at the head tube. All of the images of early Nishiki mountain bikes show them as welded, not lugged. The two 1980s Nishiki MTB frames that I have are mostly welded. The chain stays at the bottom bracket are lugged.

Womens Carrera CG02114. This is a 1987, unistem not bullmoose stem and bar; chainstay mounted rear brakes; the head badge is the block "N", not the multicolour badge. My previous post was for a 1986 Carrera, and there are lots of differences between the two model years. An American model Bushwhacker KB14260. Bushwhacker with an h, not like the Canadian model. "Designed by Norco". The DiaComp brakes were stamped "12 82". Built at the end of 1982 for the 1983 model year? |
