Your particular Norco is a 1984 model model manufactured by Yamaguchi. If you can post pictures and/or the brands and models of the major components, I should be able to identify the model and position in the line up.

Thanks!
The bikes has Nitto Grand Raundeneur135 drop bars, Sugino crank, Shimano Adamas FullFit pedals. If I remember correctly it had a Suntour shifters...

Oh, that's an easy one. Your bicycle is, or more correctly was, a Magnum ST. It was top of the line, with a Tange #2 tubeset. It's not often that owners single speed a good grand touring frame due to the geometry and high high resale value that grand tourers command.

Wowza.

Thanks. So it's a 1984 Norco Magnum ST! Good to know!

I got the bike for almost free because the shifter cables were a big mess, crank was making noise and moving all over the place, seat was destroyed, tires were flat and so on... So I ended up with a SS/FG bike for under 200$ (including bike, wheels, chain, seat, grease and some bike tools) :D

I am also curious what the frame is worth... $$

Norco Magnum ST

[QUOTE=alexs464;15110610]Thanks. So it's a 1984 Norco Magnum ST! Good to know!

I have the same bike, 56 cm, made shortly after this one, serial number Y4A9327. I got the frame free from a friend who worked in a bike shop back in the 80s. (He has a Nishiki Continental from around the same time, and doesn't need two touring bikes.) The bike shop ordered a few of them at next to nothing, and some people got a very good deal (not as good as I did, though!) as they were full cromoly double butted, as opposed to just the main triangle. I quite like the cap on the fork crown. I'm piecing it together and should have it on the road by spring. Pictures will come then.

Nice! I guess there aren't many of them around since it's pretty much impossible to find the info about these bikes...

IMHO, its more about the brand being a marketing company, and not a manufacturer. There were several brands of great bikes from that era that never made a bike: Centurion, Lotus, Univega, Nishiki, and many, many more. Unfortunately, in general, there is less information out there on these marketing brands, despite several of them selling a ton of bikes.

Its a lot easier finding information on companies that produced and sold their own bikes: Trek, Panasonic, Bridgestone, Raleigh, Schwinn, Miyata are some of better supported brands on the web. Of course, several of these brands outsourced a portion of their product line as well, just not the entire product line.

Great thread. Any chance guys would be able to help me identify this frames year and model?

Serial is KS263466.

As pictured the lugs are pretty extreme but other than the serial and the badge the markings are worn off.

By the serial number KB109251, I am guessing this Cresta is a 1982? Components are Dia Compe brake levers (model???) and Dia Compe (n500?) quick release calipers (1282 stamped on backside)with wheel guides, Sugino GT Crankset (specs???), Suntour Cyclone M-II FD and RD, Wheels: Araya 630 mm (27×1.1/4 inch) Double-walled aluminum alloy rims, 36h W/Eyelets, Hubs: SUNSHINE/Sanshin, 5345U Low Flange, Spokes: Asahi 14 ga. stainless steel, Rear Axle 120mm / Front Axle 100mm, Skewer Set: Sunshine Alloy QR, Saddle: Avocet Touring II

I do not know what the crankset or rear wheel cassette specs are, but, if anyone knows what they put on em, I'ld like to know.
Wheel info taken from a NOS ad for a set of Araya wheels w/Sanshin(5345U) hubs that match these, I didn't measure the hubs and such.

Based on the high serial number and brake date codes it's almost certainly a 1983 model built in late 1982. Unfortunately, I do not have 1983 specs, but the 1984 used 28/40/52T up front and a 13-30T, 5 cog freewheel on the back.

Thanks T-Mar!!! I just dropped it off at the LBS to have all the bearings repacked. Can't wait to get it back, finish cleaning it up and put another 30 years worth of riding on it! It has the 'Champion No. 2/Chrome Molybdenum/Butted Tubes/Tange Industries Inc.' decal on it as well. So Tange#2? Correct? And, whereabouts, would a comparatively equipped Cresta fall in the heirarchy? Middle of the road?

.

Yes, that's the same as Tange #2. It's really hard to define the exact position in the hierarchy because it is a grand touring bicycle and you're comparing it primarily to road models. Based on price ($359.95 in 1984) I'd slate it mid-range, skewed towards the lower end. At the time most of the high end grand touring bicycles (ie.Miyata 1000, Centurion Pro Tour, Specialized Expedition. etc.) were $500 or more. By the way, the 1984 Cresta was CrMo only in the main tubes, so I supect the 1983 version may be the same.

Thanks again! I can only imagine how well put together the top of the line tourers were, then. I really like this bike, everything about it.

I have a nishiki century found under ivy in the alley behind a garage of a house I bought. The bike is in surprisingly good shape considering where it was found. I am confused though about the serial number. The bottom bracket is stamped K68. Not at all like any of the numbers listed above. Can anyone help with this?

Been looking over this thread for hours. Cant find anything to match what I have. After sanding down the serial a bit, i found a hit of a J in the serial number.
KJ 28306
the componets(pics included) are:
Suntour Clamp-on Friction shifters
Suntour Cyclone Mark II FD-2300 (compared to one I found on ebay)
Sugino M-Type crank 52/42
Shimano 600 Headset
Modolo brakes (original?)
Specialized Skewers (original?)
3 TTT Mod Grand Prix handlebars
Rigida Wheels (27 inch)
BB reads "Sugino 1.37x24T"
Suntour Dropouts
Laprade seatpost
Huret downtube cable guides
Suntour 5 speed Freewheel

Based on the S/N, I say its a 1980. But not sure what the model would be. Wish it had the complete decals.

You can see the decals, but they are not any that i can recognize. It also has little hearts on the bottom of the downtube.
Ill be happy to provide any more info/pictures that would help.

edit: it has the short chainstay guard(does not reach to the cable guide). Placing the year to 1980 confuses me because all 80 bikes have trim paint on the lugs. The seat tube is not drilled for a 2nd water bottle (not sure if thats a clue). those are the only drilled holes on the frame.

24 lb bike.

Hi Icariis, welcoem to the forums. Nice looking bike. I love the Suntour components but it seems odd to marry them with Modolo brakes.

That rear wheel has to go.

icariis 01-27-13 02:30 PM

thanks Biachigirl. Im trying to update the bike. the rear wheel here is the one from my Cannondale Supersix. Not trying to spend too much, but id like to have 700c wheels and gears.

That looks almost exactly like my Road Master, but yours does not seem to have DT shifter braze-ons?
The head badge sticker and color is identical.
