Hello,

I have a Nishiki Sport hybrid that I am trying to figure out what year it was made. I think I bought it in the early 90's. I checked it against the bikepedia site but the shifters do not match up, mine are trigger shifters (Shimano 100GS) and all the 90s Nishiki hybrid shifters were grip shifters. The serial number is MIF19754, which doesn't seem to match with the Nishiki database mentioned here. Any information would be appreciated.

I do not recognize the format of that serial number.

If you could post some pictures of the whole bike, the serial number, the head badge. These would help to be able to date the bicycle.

Hey Hummer sorry for the slow reply, didn’t see this all weekend. Anyway here are some pictures of my bike. I think the S/N is actually M1F19754, you can’t see the 4 in the picture.

Yes, this serial number is more consistant with other Sport models.

This serial number is not from Kawamura or Giant.

Is there a "made in Taiwan" decal on the bicycle?

The serial number: "M" is probably for Merida of Taiwan, "1" is for 1991 the year of manufacture.

This may be a 1992 model year bicycle. The tubing decal says "Series 500" which I believe is consistent with the 1992 model year.

Yes there is a "made in Taiwan" decal on the bike. 1991-92 sounds about right, I'll go with 1992.
Bike is still running good, hoping to use it for some short initial touring trips.

Here's my 1984(?) Nishiki sport with no original parts. Serial number 4436267. Bought it here in Japan for more than it is probably worth, but frames anywhere in the ball park of my size are nearly impossible to find here so I grabbed it up. Looks like it was originally bought in Philadelphia.
A few pages back someone with the same frame was asking about converting it to 650B, and I have to say it works great. It has plenty of room for 42 mm Grand Bois tires and fenders. Maybe one of these winters I will try brazing on some canti studs.
Built with almost entirely spare parts I had sitting around, including a mutilated triple crank set up as an ultra compact double, Shimano dynamo hub, and Busch & Muller lights. Makes for a wonderful camping bike.

I just bought this gem from a friend of mine. I traced the serial number, GF700524, to 1987, made between March 9 and 20, 1987 at the Giant factory in Japan. Mine is the same color, albeit with a few differences. $150

thanks for posting the pics and serial number. That Sport model frame was made by Giant of Taiwan in 1984, based on the serial number. The decals are for the 1985 model year.

Japan looks beautiful. I wish I could be riding a bicycle there.

This is the first Nishiki frame I've seen that is the same color as my '74 International.

Interesting frame number of NL000016. Prestige, silver with black headtube(?), also large crank wheel at the front is golden colour as is at least one of the rims.

Is this a made in Japan bike and if so what year?

The frame was made in 1985. The decals are for the 1986 model year.

From the serial number alone it is difficult to determine the age of the bicycle. If you could post some pictures of the whole bike from the drive side, decals, headbadge, serial number, ...

There has been one other post with this format of serial number, also from New Zealand.

If this is a Kawamura serial number, made in Japan, then I think that the "N" or "NL" is for the New Zealand market. Normally the second letter is for the year but "L" is outside the set of characters used for the year.

The first Prestige models in the USA were for the 1985 model year. One of the colour schemes for that year was as you described. There was a "Japan" decal at the bottom of the seat tube, inside the main frame. Also I have seen the large chain ring and brake calipers in gold, but not gold rims. Sometimes the bicycles had the gold, but mostly they did not.

Do you think people had to pay more for a new Prestige with gold parts?

I missed out on the sale of the Nishiki, eventually went for NZ$ 110.00, about US70? Pretty annoyed because I think it may have been a good buy.

In most places in the USA and Canada $70 would be a good buy.

Nishiki Cresta GT - Serial Number?
 

Hello Everyone! I am wondering if any of you experts can help me with my Nishiki Cresta GT. The only thing I have to go on is the serial number under the crankshaft. WF 13 320 .....I have scoured the internet today looking for information on this bike. What year it was made, where...etc.

Go to page one of this thread and you will find how to figure out the serial code. "W" means American market, and "F" corresponds to 6, referring to 1986. From there the numbers mean production numbers. Anyway, page 1 spells it out.
Also vintage-trek.com has a page on component date codes by brand. If you look on the back of the derailleurs, for example, there are 2 letters. Those are date codes, so if the components are original to the bike, it will help nail down the timeline.
