i just bought one identical in nc in january. it is a january 81 and i gave 25 dollars for it. it doesnt look as good as yours but it completely functional. i am looking to convert the gearing to something more desireable for the hills and hollars.

Just picked up a nice 1986 Nishiki Prestige (at least, I think it is a 1986). Tange 2 frame, Suntour Cyclone derailleurs, Sansin sealed hubs, 700 cm rims, Sugino VP crankset, and Dia Compe G side pull brakes. Serial number is WE14 870 (two separate lines on bottom bracket). The brake levers are Aero Gran Compe 250, not sure if that was original or not..

I just picked up a Nishiki Marina 12 from Kpug505 (Pay it Forward thread). Serial number is 2101646 and date code GO482 so I'm assuming it's a 1982 model. Pics to follow when I get to my camera. This will be a project for my 13 yo.

Ok - here's a photo - although I think it's kind of blurry. The paint is in decent shape and the bike is cleaning up very well. It may end up as a mutt with components but the bike feels very solid. I only need a few parts and it's ready to get put back together.

Bill, You and I are twins! I've had this a few months now and never seem to find time to clean it or ride it. I thnik our two bikes are the same size.
I've since acquired a 85 International and a 85 (I belive) Medalist. I gotta stop working on my MTBs, flip bikes and donation bikes and work on my vintage bikes.

The serial number on this one is WE16 259.

Definitely a twin for sure on the Prestiges! I just changed out the bar tape, the black just didn't pop like it should. So I went with yellow. Hard to keep clean, but looks good with the yellow cable housings, yellow toe clip straps, and the yellow Nishiki logo on the downtube. Mine's a 21 inch, and they do look like the same year, same color and size.

Well, it just left today for its new home. I can't afford to keep all the nice ones....

I acquired a Professional model last fall (early/mid 70s). The Serial number does not fit with the normal ones. It is KK20201. Any idea about the second K??? Bike is sweet! It is fully chromed, with a green primer and then silver topping it off. There is a blue panel on the ST and the HT is blue as well. Lugs are huge and pointed and, along with biplane crown and dropouts, chromed. Most of the original parts were gone, maybe just the Sugino Mighty crankset original. Fork is like a track fork with round blades. Let me know what you think about the serial number.

Hello everyone. First time poster as I have been mostly hanging out on RBR that past couple of years. However, I have been very impressed with everyone's knowledge in this forum, especially with vintage bikes, so I am finding myself lurking over here more and more. Here is my question. I am considering a purchase of an 80's model custom sport that is in pristine condition. The bike has seen very little saddle time as the original owner had it stored away for over 20 years. There are no scratches, chips, or rust anywhere on this bike. Kawamura frame with Tange #5 tubing. He is asking for $135 on this bike which to me sounded a bit high for a lower level Nishiki, but after I started to think about it, $135 is a pretty good price for a bike that needs absolutely no restoration. It's ready to ride and looks almost brand new.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

I have a Nishiki frame of undetermined year, at least it has a Nishiki headtube badge. No serial number on the BB, but on the non-drive side of the maintube just above the BB is a serial number ARGY328964. It has braze-ons for cable guides on the downtube, and stamped dropouts with no derailleur hanger. I bought it to convert to SS/FG and flip, but wanted to determine the pertinent info for advertising it. I don't see any reference anywhere for serial numebrs on the maintube of Nishikis, so I don't really know if it's a Giant built or Kawamura, or ?

Assuming that you flipped the G & Y, its a 1983 frame built by Araya. This is the first Araya built Nishiki that I heard about, which is why it's not listed in the in the serial number codes.

I am very new to cycling. Up until today I had a k-mart Schwinn that I bought a few years ago. I moved into the city and I want something a little better for the road, and on an impulse buy today I picked up a Nishiki. It appears to be a century (based on the markings), but the stamp doesn't match any of the patterns listed in this thread. I will try to take some pictures and upload them tomorrow. The stamp is: GA728105

I'm having sellers remorse. I picked up a Nishiki Prestige in a thrift store, $25. Tires were bad, rest was in ok shape, I was going to rebuild it top to bottom and ended up getting another deal on a Trek that seemed nicer. So i sold the Nishiki. It, as I said, was a prestige and on the sticker, said it was triple-butted. Is the prestige the best/lightest and since I can't seem to find one again that comes in the triple-butted flavor, was that a rare frame?

I've always been a sucker for the '86 Prestige. It was the first decent roadbike I had the privilege of fiddling with. Also the first I built up from a frame:

Come to think of it, that's a pretty nice stem and seatpost. Wonder what happened to them. Looks as if I set it up with a Grant Peterson fit.

lordscarlet, from the decal set it looks like a 87.

Try looking on the inside faces of the cranks; they sometimes have a date code.

Modulus 1987
 

This is my first road bike ever, got it to commute. This thread helped me identify it as an 1987 Modulus. It caught my eye on craigslist so I picked it up knowing nothing about it. I've been very happy with it so far though the only other bike I ride is a mountain bike so I don't have much to compare to....

Year is based on the posts in this thread, it's a recent acquisition for me. Everything on it seems original except the seat. Components are mostly Shimano 105. Stumbled upon this thread while researching the bike trying to figure out what I can do to clean it up and protect it. I think I'm going to take a few maintenance classes at a local coop before attempting anything. My main concern is the paint is scrapped in several place, I've read that clear nail polish might help or there are tape products...

It looks as though it was used for what it was built for. Riding...The 105 components are pretty nice also. Very cool I like the paint scheme a lot.

Could anyone give me an idea of what year this might be? I have not seen the bike yet, it's on the other side of town and would like to know whether it's worth the trip. It's a 12 speed with stem shifters.

That head decal was used in the early 1980s. Based on the stem shifters it should be an entry level model.

Thanks T-Mar, Entry level? but still a Kawamura made frame? Would it have reasonable tubing? i.e. butted CroMo? Components are not relevant, as I want to modernize it somewhat.

Never mind, it's been on the web for 2 weeks, and when I inquired, turns out he sold it today. Sigh.

I can't answer those question without more information, specifically the serial number and model name. However, most likely it is hi-tensile steel and was made by Giant. The chances of it having a butted CrMo frame are very small.

What the heck is this? Is this a carbon/aluminium frame? Do those look like Dura Ace cranks to anyone else? Thanks for any input, if I buy it, I will post up some better pics, maybe even with the wheels on the bike ;)
