I'm pretty sure there is no such a thing as a "French frame bb shell size". The shell should be 68mm which is standard, at least according to my Motobecane ("Definitely French"). The charming thing about French bottom brackets is the threading, not the width. But if the current spindle works and your chainline isn't all out of whack, I wouldn't worry about it. On the other hand, if the chainline suggests that you need a different spindle, you'll need one for a 68mm BB.
