Crank/RD/freewheel compatibility question.
This is for my recent Paramount find, please help if possible....
My question refers to the compatibility in chain length, cage length, and crankset. As some of you already know, it's a Campy triple. The freewheel I plan to use is is a Shimano 600 13/23. The RD I plan to use is a Nuovo Record. Does anyone see a problem with this setup? Should I still need a long cage RD with the smaller freewheel? There really are no hills around here that the small front and 23 couldn't handle. The final 13/large combo would be close to average, so top speed would still be there. On an average ride I find myself on the middle of a triple, and middle to smaller of the rear cogs. I'm just thinking out loud. It's still in the planning stage so none of this is set in stone.,,,,BD

I just noticed the bike already has a short cage on it. This may work? I tried the large/large combo and although it was tight, it didn't jam up and could be shifted back to a normal configuration. This was with a standard large freewheel. Unless the NR cage is tiny, it should work fairly well. Update later. I am stuck working again tomorrow, fourth week in a row working 6 days a week. I don't have time to wrench much less ride

BD, want to trade? My double Campy R/NR cranks for your triple? I do live where there are a few hills.
I kind of doubt the NR RD will carry that much difference between the 36 small and (is it a 53 or 54) the big chainring. That's a 17 or 18 tooth jump which requires almost double the chain length that a typical 42 small - 52 big, 10 tooth jump, that a double requires.
I rigged my NR RD to work on the Continental with a 15-29 tooth freewheel (which is a big stretch for a NR), but I only used a 42-47 in the front. I cannot, however, shift into the big-big combination.

My largest rear cog will be a 23 though, the large/large should be easily doable. I think if a short cage Shimano light action can handle it with the huge freewheel, the NR might be able to cope with a 13/23. If it doesn't work out I may consider it. The bike is a P-15 however, and came with the triple. After seeing what they go for, there's no way I could afford to get a replacement should I decide to make it original again. I could, but my wife would take my wallet from me, and put me on an allowance. lol.,,,,BD

Stock gearing for the NR triple was 52-45-36, but you could make a really slick half-step-plus-granny with 48-45-36 and your 13-15-17-19-21-23 freewheel. I did something similar with a short-age SunTour Cyclone II derailleur on my PKN-10: 48-45-34 / 13-15-17-19-21-23. The gearing worked extremely well, although the chain did hang a bit loose in the (unused and redundant, anyway) 34/13 combination.

I threw the smaller freewheel on and it works! Still have to double check the NR but it's looking good. Works on large/large and the cage is only a little forward of normal. It's also a nice feeling combo, and will be able to handle decent incline. The NR isn't here yet, so it may be next weekend before I can install it. I also just found out I got another similar 600 freewheel on a wheelset I bought a couple of months ago. It went onto the International(Nishiki) which is becoming a slightly modernized late 80's 105 mixed with Cyclone M-II RD/FD and shifters.,,,,BD
