slipping bars through a quill stem- how's it done?

i've got a cinelli XA stem and i am trying to install a cinelli 64-40 giro bar into the 1 piece quill stem.

how is this done without ruining the bars? i can't seem to get the quill stem past the bends in the bars to get it into the correct place without resorting to some questionable antics.

thanks-

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

open the stem as wide as it will go and sort of turn/rotate the stem as you
work up the bends. If that doesn't work a screwdriver to gently pry the stem
open works too.

I've got a special pair or spreading pliers just for this. There is always the reverse the bolt and a penny trick too.
Faceplate stems are one of the best new things in cycling.
Ever wrestle a modolo 8 bend into a Sycros stem?

another question:

i've tightened the stem down pretty hard, but it seems that i can still move the bar/stem combo left and right in fork tube even though it's tightened. i'm afraid to tighten it more as it's making a squealing noise.

does anyone know a torque value for the stem bolt? is this normal that the stem should move in the fork (albeit with some effort)?

thanks-

Squealing noise is bad. Grease the entire bolt and expander and counter bore where the head of the stem bolt sits. It is normal to be able to twist the stem in the fork with some effort.

Really? Your stem would slip in the fork every time you muscle up a hill...

i thought that i greased the entire stem assembly pretty thoroughly. i did not grease the bolt though, just the stem body and the expander. i'll try again.

so it is true that with some effort (not little), the stem does move side to side in the fork tube?

thanks-
