hi,

i stumbled upon this frame and it caught my eye because of the chrome- the whole frame is chromed. it's a bit rough, but should make a fancy beater

can anyone ID this? i have a suspicion that it's from the late 80's or the early 90's.

any help appreciated.

Decal set indicates pre-'84.

Pretty nice beater, too bad about the condition, I'd definitely consider restoring it. Has the exact same features as my girlfriends bike which I guess to be a 1981-83.

It looks a lot like mine from '82, except in chrome. I think yours should clean up quite nicely. Get a tube of Simichrome if you don't already have one.

if yours is indeed an 82, then redmist's chromed professional frameset is likely an 83- his has the later full sloping fork crown and fork tang detailing.

Good catch. The date I gave of '82 won't hold up in court. It's based on what the sellers (plural) told me. I took parts from a 51cm frame and put them on an otherwise identical 57cm frame.

i used to ride a 51 cm professional sl in champagne gold with nuovo record from 1977 up until shortly before ordering the derosa.

Thanks. I think you're right about the OP's Guerc being an '83. I'm not sure what to recommend about the missing chrome on his top tube. But I think it would still look great built up. Hopefully he'll posts pics when he's done.

how about prepping the top,down and seatubes, masking off the lugs & stays, then mask the "guerciotti" decals on the DT (from just behind the shift bosses and an equal amount on the other end), mask off the centre of the seatube just beyond the rainbow stripes, etc. to present a painted & clearcoated main triangle with decalled chrome panels? maybe paint the fork crown to match? you'd have to replace just the columbus sticker and would only loose the paolo signature.

thanks a lot caterham. you really are a wealth of knowledge. i've searched around for info on-line for a guerciotti professional, and haven't yet found anything- just a few bikes on velospace and an odd bike for sale from a few years ago. do you know any place that i could reference from- books or otherwise?

i'm not sure what to do with this bike as i have just finished a big project (the mondonico) and i'm still deciding what to do with the cinelli. i like to concentrate on one thing at a time. i may tuck her away for safe keeping after a good scrub down with some simichrome or i may consider a full restoration on the frame, but with all that chrome, it sounds prohibitively expensive! this may well be a long term project- starting with a frame restore (either by professional means or with a bit of elbow grease) and then the arduous task of collecting the correct SR parts and so forth. can anyone recommend a good frame restoration shop that can do chrome? ideally, i'd like to keep the frame in a fully chromed appearance.

fyi- my designation of guerciotti "professional" for the model of your frameset is based on my recollection of the approx 1980 italian colour folded brochure distributed by ten speed drive showing the full range of guerciotti bicycles. my memory is that the bikes shown were fully equipped completed units. alongside the pictures were the nomenclatures: " super record professional strada"," nuovo record professional strada", "gran sport strada"(falck tubing), "nuovo record pista",etc.. including the cover photo of the "super record oro professional strada "(identical in frame spec to the super record & nuovo record but maxed out with gold plating and obscene amounts of pantographings)a cyclocross model and a child's racer with details of their respective build gruppos. all the columbus sl bikes and frames were essentially the same as yours save small detail revisions such as f derail. braze-on, change in fork crown, etc. that appeared sporadically and incrementally until the major frameset revisions in approx. 1984
I once found the brochure somewhere on the internet but unfortunately have long lost the website address.

thanks for that link. i've downloaded that before, but i'd forgotten about the section on guerciotti. i think i may have seen that brochure some time ago, but didn't realize it's significance as i was looking for a late 80's guerciotti. i'm going to poke around again and see if i can retrace my steps.

the poster size bike pic sure looks right but i don't recall any 'english' script. it's even folded the same. probably the same brochure was printed in english and italian versions. do you have access to the opposite side?
