whats it worth
Hey guys, just scrounged this bike out of a friends basement and am having a hard time figuring out what its worth on the ebay/craigslist marketplace.
the serial number apears to have been stamped poorly or painted over a little too well, but as far as i can tell its a 50 cm 1989 aluminum cannondale, i cant find any model name or numbers on the frame but i have a hunch its an sr900, it has full campagnolo componentry with 32 hole victory strada rims on campagnolo hubs. the paint is in good shape and no frame damage that i have found. i flip a fair amount of bikes, but the components are so above and beyond the shimano 105 that i usualy manage to get my hands on i have no real frame of reference for assesing its worth. do you think it would be worth more whole or parted out? i appreciate any help!

Shimano 105 is not junk...You will need take into account that this forum is great for determining value of old components but the fact that you are a flipper wanting to exploit the wisest community of cyclists for profit is somewhat annoying.
Perhaps you should have inquired about the quality and level of components function rather than monetary value. I think you would have gotten a much more positive response that way.
Good luck. 40$ and a Burrito plus you pay for shipping and I'll call it a deal!

I believe the reason for it is as the OP is asking this question specifically with the purpose of flipping this for a definite profit.
See this thread - particularly the second page:

I flip bikes, and definitely for a profit. I get a few shekels to rub together, and I put a lot of butts in saddles. Everyone is happy.
I agree that it is kind of annoying that people outside our little coterie pop in, ask "the question", and then disappear. But - so what? It happens. Best to be civil, methinks, than get all worked up over it. Don't forget - Sorefeet mentioned about getting a Fender guitar cheap a while back and selling it off for $500 to a collector..... no one slapped his hand over that, so where's the beef here?

I have a 96 Cannondale SR500 and a 91 SR400. I try to take note about the value of C-dales. IMHO, I estimate your bike to be about a $250-$300 bike if you're in a good market and someone wanting Campy with an aluminum frame is looking in your area.
IMHO, Without going into a lot of detail, to get more than $300 will take brifters.
EDIT: My name is Roccobike, and I'm a recovering bike flipper.

thank you for the replies. i guess i can see why people are annoyed, next time ill be more devious about my intentions. the decal that says chorus on the chainstay refers to the model line of campagnolo components, where does the fall on hierachy of campy?

Chorus is towards the top of the hierarchy - Record, Chorus, Centaur, Veloce, and a couple of others towards the bottom.

After all, if one is going to ask for advice that they will ultimately profit on (with little, if any courtesy shown), I don't see why we should give free handouts while they mosey on out, never to be seen again.
Point is, asking about value should require a bit of "pay it forward" in the way of said member giving some posts back to the community, instead of letting their one-time-use user name rot away. Case in point, that fellow from Cyprus asking about the value of his "Sturmey Archer" Rudge DL-1. I believe the bike is one of the odd post '76 export models, and requested that he report back with hub and frame serial numbers so that he can benefit the community as well through his request for value. He hasn't been heard of since.

The thread that really takes the cake is the Royce Union guy, who asks "what is it worth", and then has the nuts to direct us to contact him via email because he's apparently too lazy to come back to check on the answers to the thread he started.

That is the irritating part of it, not so much the subsequent flipping.

Good luck with the flipping. Lots of us do some of it on the side to help defray the expense of the hobby.
