Wow this thread still has legs after almost three years. I never did use the Suntour 7 I found a nice Shimano Crane that was NOS and used that for my wifes bike.

Suntour 7 from my local co op has a new life too. Probably sacrilege what I did with it , but maybe posting tomorrow with a pic or two. I was pleased.

The Suntour derailers (other than 3040 models) and the Shimano friction derailers all had an actuation ratio similar to old Dura-Ace.
If you connect a Seven rear derailer to a Shimano 7- or 8-speed shifter, you can probably get it to index a 6s freewheel pretty well.
Depends quite a bit on details such as the chain used, the sprocket teeth, the B-tension chain gap, and especially the cabling (cable length, whether modern shift housing is used, and if the cable runs only against plastic-lined surfaces).
