There is a Nishiki registry thread in here someplace. I can't tell you exactly what year it is, but I can tell you I logged almost countless miles on an Olympic back in the 80's.
It did everything I ever asked of it, except make me a better climber........

From the use of side pull brakes and lack of braze-ons on the frame, I would guess late 70s, maybe 1977. If the bike had center-pulls I would have guessed before 1975. I suggest you have a look at the Nishiki serial number thread and the look up the date codes of the components on the vintage Trek site.

It is a 1980 Nishiki Olympic, 100% positive, based on the serial number, components and decals. The interesting aspect is the N prefix for the serial number as I have not seen an N in use before. However, this letter is a market indicator and I wonder is this bicycle was originally orignally intended for a market other than Canada or the USA, which is what I nomally see.
Regardless, the Olympic was an entry level model, typically 2nd or 3rd from the bottom of the line and should weigh about 28 lbs. Yours has a hi-tensile steel frame which is rugged and well built. The component selection is decent and appears to be all original. It's a good but not great bicycle. But at $5 it is a great purchase.

Thanks for the info guys.
I knew that the hi-ten frame wouldn't be top of the line but this bike is in good shape and I'll take it apart and kill some time sprucing it up.
I have a Schwinn that I just got togeather and have been riding but I couldn't pass this up.
Thanks again

Very Nice find. Especially for $5.
Your Schwinn is a newer model and very nice too.
I guess you like blue bikes!

I almost bought a Varsity last weekend for $10 but it was pretty rough.

Forgive my heresy
Forgive my heresy, but that is an excellent candidate for fixed-gear conversion. No braze-ons, nice condition frame.
Lose all of the components and it gets MUCH lighter. I did it with an old 70s frame and it is a great bike that you can actually lift. Lose the clamp-on levers, clamp-on cable guides, and it looks like it was meant to be SS or FG.
And who knows, maybe you get $30-40 for some of the components and you can treat yourself to a nice seatpost.

Nice find. Do you have a thing for blue bikes?

I sold the Nishiki because I found another bike to re-build.
I wanted to keep it but I'm limited on the room I have to store bikes.
I have room for 3 or 4 for myself and the wifes one.
I put about 50 miles while I had it and this is what it looked like when I sold it.
