Newbie help: Stems and paint

I want to buy a stem for my bike. How do I know what kind to buy? I want 140mm-150mm and I would like it to be tall enough to help fit better. What concerns me is: the diameter, price, and-will it fit my handlebar. Here's a link to one I am considering:

https://cgi.ebay.com/New-Old-Stock-3T...QQcmdZViewItem

Next, I would like to know what I should know before I paint my bike. I'm handy enough and smart enough I could do it with out advice, but it's always nice to hear peoples opinions before you go and change something drastically as I'm about to do. I'm thinking a gray primer or a glossy gray color to replace the red. I'll try to upload a pic of the bike with this post.

TIA--any and all ideas are greatly appreciated.

Please stop reposting this. It's getting obnoxious.

EDIT: I've now taken a breath, calmed myself, and I'm able to move on. Sorry for the knee-jerk; this Interweb gadget does strange things to me sometimes.

And would you do us a favor and clean up after yourself, i.e. delete your re-posts? TIA.

OP can't delete threads, only mods/admins can do that.

It's just possible that due to the current glitch in the forums software that
the thread quadruple posted. I've seen it before so lets go easy on the OP.

Oh, fine, I'll just go and kick my dog again.

ETA: It's cleaned up now, so thanks to whoever did that. Now to the OP: pictures and details on this bike, please!

Sorry I didn't know it was posting... the page never loaded. I assure you it wasn't directly my fault, I had no idea it was posting. Anyhow.. Any advice on stems?

BTW I like your quote Txvintage

The picture didn't upload... Maybe it's too big. How can I load larger pictures?

Details on the bike: mid 80's SR Semi-Pro Racing bike. What other information can I provide? How can I load larger pictures... cause I dont have little baby pictures 100kb isn't enough.

the SR Semi-Pro will take a 22.2 quill stem. Your handlebar is most likely either a 25.4 or 26.0 clamp diameter. If you are looking for a stem to get you up fairly high, the nitto technomic is probably your best bet. They come in both clamp sizes I'm fairly sure. Price isn't too bad, but not dirt cheap either. Plenty to be found via a google search.

Thank you thats exactly the information I was wondering... but couldn't put in the right words. Consequences of me not getting much sleep last night. That answers my stem question, now... should I paint, and what do I need to know before I do?

Do a Search for painting your bike. There's even a sticky thread near the top of the forum that covers this.

Strip the frame of all parts and remove the seatpost too, just in case it's stuck (or something). Don't paint any of the parts and definitely don't ask if it's worth $400 or so should you decide to sell.

You might want to sand the old paint off as well. Automotive paint that's baked on (you can use quartz lights to bake if you do it carefully and responsibly) will show best. Hard on the lungs though, so you might consider a professionals help with that.
