CL Freebie

It's really rough and been hacked on at some point in it's life, but I have a soft spot for all things rusty and neglected...besides the price was perfect.

Too small for me, but it might make a nice ride for my daughter.

Someone actually gave away a vintage steel Trek road bike??? Wow, that puppy would easily sell for around $150, maybe more around here if it was ride ready.

a few detail shots just so you know the folks who gave it away weren't completely crazy; it's rough, but certainly salvagable:

Somebody tried to cut the bottle mounts off with a dremel:

nice dent in the top tube:

looks like a bent hanger:

lots of missing paint/rust:

Still overall it has a lot of potential.

While I was working on an old MTB in the garage tonight, my 10 year old daughter asked what I had planned for "that old one" as she pointed to the Trek and I could tell by the twinkle in her eye she was mentally calling "dibs".

A few teaser pics of the rebuild.

Was suprised how much sparkle was in the paint...must have been a real looker when it was new.
(Probably going to have a hard time finding touch up paint to match though.)

It's got a long way to go before it hits the rode again, but I'll keep you guys posted. I'm not sure where the project is headed, but it should be a fun trip.

Bikes: 62 Falcon, 58 Raleigh Lenton Gran Prix, 74 Raleigh Pro, 75 Raleigh Int, 75 Raleigh Comp, 76 Colnago Super, 75 Crescent, 80 Peugeot PX10, plus others too numerous to mention!

Looks good to me! I have one that size (well, maybe smaller, a 50cm), 760 "Pro" series. Nice bikes. Treat the rust with anti-rust "medication" or even Oxalic acid, and you should be good to go. I have a Trek fork that had some rust "pits" in it. I scraped away the paint and just dipped the whole fork, one prong at at time, in straight wood bleach (put in the jug from the top and it stayed right there). That treatment completely scoured out the rust from those pits, so they were easy to fill with body filler and sand out. This was a Reynolds 531c fork.

Bikes: I used to have many. And I Will again.

Nice, definitely salvageable. But depends on how much restoring is desired.
I'd opt to bead-blast the rust and finish off so to address the corrosion and dent. Treat the steel with rust neutralizer. Fill in the dent, take a vise grip to the dropout and re-align it. Prime and repaint it. Reattach the Trek headtube badge and it'll look like new. Your daughter will be jumping for joy!
