Mario Cipollini (born 22 March 1967 in Lucca, Tuscany), often abbreviated to "Cipo", is an Italian professional road cyclist most noted for his sprinting ability, the longevity of his dominance (his first pro win came in 1989, his last in 2005; 191 victories in all) and his colourful personality. His nicknames include Il Re Leone (The Lion King) and Super Mario and is regarded by many as one of the finest sprinters of his generation.

Nope. His first 'gig' was dodging barrels and other harmful debris thrown by 'Donkey Kong' in the big gorilla's first arcade game and it launched Mario and his brother Luigi into videogame history in "Super Mario Bros" as well as making Nintendo a legend.
Mario and Luigi are Italian (presumably) brothers and PLUMBERS by trade who find themselves moving through a lot of tunnels/pipes, killing various creatures and collecting bonuses and coins and superpowers by running and leaping and landing on top of bad guys. The 'worlds' (courses with multiple sections) they go through all lead on a quest to rescue a Princess, with certain parts of the field housing puzzles/skill games to gain powers that assist in the quest.
Luigi is an optional player and another can play him with you or even against.
An evil doppelganger of Mario is named Wario and there is Dr. Mario, Mario Cart (racing game) and there have been SMB kids shows both animated and with live actors. It really is the most successful videogame ever created in terms of exposure and fans, Halo not withstanding.
I'm really sorry that I've never heard of this person you mentioned. I hope I'm not ignorant but I've been a cruiser rider most of my life and Lemond was about the start of my knowledge in my youth. My knowledge does need fortification.

I have questioned my 14-year old on this Super Mario thing. First he called me ancient.
He went to the attic and found his Nintendo 64, which I never really paid attention to, other than his James Bond games. I now know who Super Mario is, and payback will be forthcoming. Maybe I'll put his single speed build on hold for a while.
In the meantime, I help organize and direct some 5K and 10K road races, and I think I'll try to pitch a Super Mario division to the sponsors, using a ht/wt ratio. I'll equal the awards and see if I can get a pipe wrench engraved or mounted on a plaque.
I thought about it for bike rides/races, but I've seen many, many riders of Mario's build pass me and disappear into the immediate future, so I know better.

^^ Don't keep his single speed on hold. Just build it up with a 54/11 gear combo and make him do hill repeats.

At least that game is in the ATTIC.
PS You predate disco and I was born the week Paperback Writer by the Beatles was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and I assure you that while we lack barnacles and big bony foreheads, we are kinda ancient.
If they've never asked you to be an insurance spokescaveman, you'll make it through
