Keith Lippy ?

I just received (today) a Keith Lippy frameset that I purchased from a Serotta employee that had it aligned and painted by Serotta - it is PERFECT. My question is does anyone have a guess as to the age it has the brazed on decals and is s/n L207 and has 126mm spacing.

Photo's will follow this weekend.

The frame 54TT weighs an amazing 1680g, the fork 600g not bad for an older frame.

Thanks,
Jeff

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

Keith Lippy built for Masi (not sure of the period) and
then was building bikes in his own name in Bend Oregon. I've
read that he retired about 5 or 6 years ago.

I think he built for Masi not long after Mario Confente passed away, late '80s or so

Lippy built under his own name as early as 1974, by 1975 had a pretty good reputation, was based in San Diego area. He did build for Masi, after Mario left and right at about the time Carlsbad was no longer a fully capable bike factory. So that places it very late 1976 to early 1977.

From a few sources, the Masi relationship was short lived.

I am aware he made bikes up to and including the 80's. Like Dave Moulton, out of the biz.

The bikes I have seen kind of follow the Albert Eisentraut school, simple, clean. Perhaps not enough visual personality for the times.

The only s/n reference I have found is that:
L100 is a 1977
L423 is a 1997

So I am guessing that this frame (L207) is probably a mid 80's frame. I don't think it has any connection to Masi at all.

Thanks,
Jeff

Bump

Also is there any way to tell what tubing was used in a frame without any sticker being present? The bike was refinished B4 I got it. It is very light 1680g.

Thanks,
Jeff

If it's refinished I really think all bets were off, unless the painter was one of the top guys such as Joe Bell. If the frame had no tubing labels when new, it had a mixed frame set, possibly a custom frame.

Best way to get specific info on this Lippy is contact Keith or his wife Pat and provide them with the serial number. I believe this web page may have their current contact info: https://www.all-oregon.com/city/salem/recreation.htm He definitely retired and went back to teaching school; however, more recent posts seem to suggest he may be getting more involved with cycling again.

Is that oversized Columbus EL tubing, or is it of standard diameter?

I think that is actually a repainted Schwinn Varsity. I will pay the shipping cost and dispose of it properly.
