What year did they go to vertical rear drops? Did the Rockhopper change at the same time?

Jim, Don't know about the Stumpy, but my 94 Rockhopper Sport has horizontal drop outs.
My reaction.

Why do you want horizontal dropouts on a mountain bike?

Ditto with both of mine also. Actually the only real difference between them is the Stumpy is a lugged frame and Rockhopper is TIG welded. They have identical groups.

Maybe it's for a SS or fixie conversion.

talking about stumpjumpers...

Well, my '87 Stumpjumper is TIG-welded/lugless and has horizontal dropouts. I generally like horizontals drops but w/ the chainstay-mounted u-brake they're a pain because it makes adjusting the rear tire more critical. I blew my back tire because I had pulled the rear wheel a few millimeters too far back, and the brake pads rubbed through the sidewall a few miles into a ride.

I think 1991 or '92, although it's hard to be sure. My 1992 has vertical dropouts, but the model pictured in the 1992 catalog is shown with horizontal dropouts. Could be the catalog was shot using preliminary spec'ed models, or maybe they were in the middle of a running change from horizontal to vertical, and were just using up the last of their stock.

And then again, I just looked at my '93 catalog, and the pictured front suspension Stump has vertical dropouts, while the rigid fork Stump has horizontal.

Mine's lugged, blue, and has chromed vertical dropouts. It's an early one... '84ish? We're going out on the trails again tomorrow!

They used the 1983 bars on their reproduction - I guess the 1981-82 bars were too expensive to recreate.
