Today was an adventure. We met sherbornpeddler and rode 54.06 miles, starting in

MA (which I wrote that way because it is more vertical than horizontal), and looping down into northeastern Rhode Island. Along the way we learned a new definition of the word "gradual".
The day started with the tandem not going onto the granny chainring. Fortunately sbp realized very quickly that he didn't need his superbike to keep up with us and made a quick detour to his house so he could switch to his single-speed Raleigh Pro (at least I think it was a Pro). I took the opportunity to borrow a wrench and loosen the FD cable I'd installed last night. That did the trick, shifting-wise. And truth be told, we had trouble keeping up with sbp even after the bike switch!

Finally, back at the start hours later, tired but still standing:
Sbp gave us some options at the start, and we chose the 50+ mile run to Rhode Island. I have no idea where we went but it sure was fun. Some roads were busy but most were wonderfully quiet. And either uphill or fast downhill. Our top speed was 31mph, but I kept hitting the brakes because I wasn't sure of the road surface.
Sbp kept describing the roads as gradually going uphill. It's, ah, all a matter of perspective, isn't it?
Then he would admit to misremembering it, either misunderestimating the steepness or length. I figure we can tell ourselves congradualations for climbing all those steeeeep or looooong hills. Fortunately they usually weren't both. But I was really glad the 28T chainring was accessible again.
It was a great day! Thanks to sbp for putting up with us.

While I kept apologizing for the slow uphills as our friend Katie was riding with us today while we were on the tandem, she said it was fine as it gave her a chance to catch her breath after the fast downhills where she had to chase us. 
It is all a matter or perspective, that is for sure!

Warm afternoon sunshine and a dry breeze called for a leasurely spin around town, through some parks and to explore quiet roads. Three hours later I found my rest, basking in the late afternoon sun enjoying an Italian Ice; a Rita's of course, Alex's Lemonade. Everyday should be so sweet!

OK, so this was actually yesterday, but I just got back in town today. We journeyed across state to the historic river town of Rocheport, Missouri to ride in BikeMO, an annual group ride that raises funds for state bicycling advocacy. There were several route options to choose from, including a leg of the Katy Trail and 30 mile, 67 mile, and 100 mile road routes. My three companions are only occasional cyclists, and I encouraged them to bring their around-the-town bikes out of dusty storage to join the morning fray - after all, that's what cycling advocacy is all about. They worried needlessly about being the only riders to show up with kickstands: in addition to various levels of roadie, there were plenty of families and casual riders.
We started out at the top of a river bluff overlook at a local winery, four riders in a crowd of maybe two hundred. The country here is beautiful - Heritage and Century Farms, historic river towns, river bottom lands with rows of corn and beans drifting off into the distant bluffs lining the river. The ride begins with a long, steep descent - well, steep enough that everyone gets the thrill of going pretty fast for about a mile or so. I was pleased to see a few C&V bikes in the crowd of townies and carbon fiber - I'm used to being the solitary steel rider for many such events.
The first fifteen miles flies by very quickly: it's flat and there's a slight tailwind carrying us along into Boonville, Missouri and our first SAG stop. I stop long enough to grab an Oreo (or maybe two... as a diabetic, I normally avoid them like the plague... but I figure I'll metabolize those suckers on the climb coming up, soooo... Oreo time!) I'm planning to ride the metric century route and get several miles into it when I hear my cell phone buzz. My companions, who'd planned to only do a ten mile loop, had gotten over confident and were heading out onto the flats. They'd turned back into the wind and discovered it wasn't so easy to punch a hole through. Essentially, they wound up hitting the wall a couple of miles into their turnaround, so I found myself in the inadvertent role of SAG rider. I turned around and headed back to pick them up and accompany them back to an easy access point on the Katy so that they could ride back to the trail head on a flat pathway with no winds to worry them.
In the end, I still wound up with 40-ish miles, a great ride in the flats with a tail wind, and several sections of rollers with only one challenging climb. And that climb dropped me off at the finish with a pretty spectacular view.
My ride for the event was the Freschi Supreme Super Cromo, a bike no one had ever even heard of before, let alone ever having seen. It's a fast, dreamy ride that fits me very well and looks sexy as all get out - not to mention gets plenty of comments... which, of course, I enjoy immensely!

I hope you have another bike to ride in the meanwhile! Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long to get another set of tires.
I might start saving the rough stuff for my Kelly. That sidewall rip/bulge on my De Rosa front tire probably would not have happened if I had stayed on the pavement. Although, that tire was old and dry; well past its prime. I feel frugal for wringing those miles out of it.
Southpawboston's comment regarding flats and D2R2 gives me pause as well. I know a guy who did it on a Grandis with 23mm tires, but he is super hard core randonneur/ brevit rider. If I do it next year I'll probably use the Kelly.

A buddy and I rode around Lake Tahoe. On mountain bikes. 74 miles per my GPS. This is almost all rollers, with two more sustained climbs at Emerald Bay and Spooner Summit. 3,400 ft cumulative climbing and of course an equal descent.

Your ride with Katie looks like fun (the flats not withstanding). I especially like the part about ducking under the canopy to escape the downpour. Those fender must be nice when you're on a wet road, even after the rain has stopped.
Apparently everybody got in some good mileage this weekend, vg, scozim, nb, jyl, (who'd I fergit?).
Whodathunkit that just two wheels in-line like that would work for so many people?

We have been riding about 50-60 miles per week. That's usually done in 3-4 days. Not exactly a ton, but it's all that I can squeeze in at the moment. I am looking to lose some of the weight I gained while my wife was pregnant. She looks great now and I am playing catch up.

It's fair and rodeo weekend here in our town. Thursday is always family day - actually more of a community day before all the tourists come in for the rodeo starting tomorrow. Absolutely beautiful day to 1) ride and 2) spend at the fair.

That's great though, every Dad should have that feeling about their children. It's one of those things how much you care about your family. Great pictures, your daughters look like they are having a great time.

WOW, you are good! Yes, it's a Mazda 3. I like it a lot, best car i've owned....well, compared to a 1988 mercury sable and a Cavalier... but still.

my route today was pretty stinky in general... even literally. The route follows right next to a highway, rolls through some tough areas of town, past the smelliest sewage plant, a juvenile detention center and the strip mines. The strip mine areas smelled a little even.
The ends of the ride are sweet though.... ice cream and deli at one end, great smelling bread factory at the other.

Middletown Loop Run
Today, I went for a 30 mile ride up to Middletown and back - one of my favorite rides lately. We left at 7 AM, rode up to have breakfast and then returned home over a route that took us to Catoctin Creek Park and that has a couple of pretty big hills. As I was almost home, there was a ribbon-cutting event for the Smithsonian sponsored Journey Stories, so I stopped and hung out a while and took a brief look at the exhibits.
For this ride, I took out the 1972-ish Peugeot PX-8 frankenbike as I had just swapped the porteur bar to a drop bar and replaced the Brooks Saddle with an Ideale Model 39 that I acquired from a fellow forumite a few weeks back. I have never ridden the bike in this configuration but have decided I like this set up a lot! This bike will probably see more saddle time with this configuration.
Stopped to take a couple pictures because we liked the effect the haze had on the landscape as it was hanging on the ground.

It's fair and rodeo weekend here in our town. Thursday is always family day - actually more of a community day before all the tourists come in for the rodeo starting tomorrow. Absolutely beautiful day to 1) ride and 2) spend at the fair.
