July 4th ride (pre Arthur)

Nice sunrise pic vonruden! I left at 7AM to get a ride in on the Dawes before the rains came. 39 miles in Scituate-Foster-Coventry. Super humid, temp around 75.

I saw several cyclists out for rides; they probably had the same idea. I rode with one guy for a few miles. He was from Wales and said the humid, rainy conditions were just like home!

It wasn't a completely dry ride; it did rain on my parade briefly.

85 miler today on one of my favorite routes. The new bike really is smooth on the country roads, yet really is stiff when I get out of the saddle and climb. Some pics of my usual stops. Was one of those lucky days where I got out early and headed into a light wind that became stronger once I turned around. Battled a bit of a cross wind between River Falls and Woodbury, but overall couldn't expect much better conditions over a long ride.

Batten down the hatches East coasters. Stay safe.

I've been working on a new singletrack MTB trail. I have about 70% complete after just two days of work and great volunteers.

I took last weeks group ride on it to test it out. My buddy Callum filmed a pretty tranquil section with his Google Glasses. He starts riding behind me at about 2:38 for a minute or so before he falls over a log xing. (Also, check out his other videos of his rock days in Tokyo. He's the drummer)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYqME...3oqWiT3BZ_0LoQ

If anyone is local to Kingston, NY and wants to work July 11 or 12, contact me.

A great ride this morning, especially after agitating myself with that garmin! For some reason the Batavus got the nod as the first road bike after my too long lay off from riding. I almost changed my mind after remembering I never got around to putting a 42 on in place of the 39. Well as it turns out I think the 39 and 13-25 cassette (I think) were perfect step up from the 38-48 and 12-28 on the project. I never thought I would see the day I would do an entire ride in a 39 but it has come. Between my somewhat less than peak fitness level and not wanted to exert my self too much too early it was perfect. I managed to turn in a sluggish 17.94 miles at blistering pace of 12 mph. The important thing is I managed a good 145 bpm I think that places right in my fat burning zone.

That's a lot of pallets!! They are 7 or 8 deep.

Cool pic Bianchigirl!

I went for a short ride this afternoon too; 16 miles. Sunny and windy! Took the Gitane.

Constant 25mph wind here. So, just spun it up and stayed on top of things into the wind, then turned around and enjoyed the push back home for a 36 mile round trip.

Another cool start to the day, I think the temp was 59ish when I got up around 0630ish so I blogged/posted here for a bit while I had a leisurely breakfast. After the temp warmed up to 73ish, I still have this old racer think about tights under 70d, I grabbed the Batavus and headed out for a ride. Took a little wider swing through the country and while hoping for a 20 I netted a 19.4! Maybe tomorrow.

And of course here is the gratuitous pic of the bike.

15 of us mostly 'boomers' today. We did 43 miles @ 16mph avg. speed. And we had some wind coming back.
I woke-up at 04:00 this morning dreaming about how TODAY I WAS NOT going to be the straggler and drag-down the group. Finally I didn't finish last! And it was a pretty fast ride. (It was a "D group" ride which is 13~15 mph in our club)

Rode from West Lafayette Indiana to the Klein Brot Haus German bakery in Brookston Indiana

Riding the Indiana prairie is a crap-shoot for wind. Pretty much every ride is gonna have some wind to deal with. Not too many killer hills though, but there are some hills out there in the river valleys.

When we got to the Brot Haus my 'puter said (30 miles @ 17.4mph average speed!) Absolutely the fastest 30 miles I have ridden in my entire life! But we did have a wind advantage. But then we rode into that wind those 13 miles back. So, not bad actually. I only fell behind twice. On the way out to Brookston, I realized that I had too much to drink before we left and had to visit the corn field, but caught them no problem as there was a wind advantage. Then on the return, I fell back once on a long climb over the Interstate but within a couple of miles I had caught them again. Had some good drafting opportunities today. Dave Smith helped me a lot coming out of Brookston on the road toward Battleground. He has a large profile and he is a strong rider, so I got in behind him on his 8 o'clock and we were doing about 16mph into the cross-wind. Funny how the tall corn was blocking some wind today, as soon as we would pass into bean-field areas, you could tell the difference. The wind was from the Southwest and when we were riding South, the corn was worth an extra mph vs. the lower crops of beans.

I rode my Bob Jackson ~ Reynolds 853 with 3Rensho lugs, Shimano 600 8-speed tri-color and Selle Anatomica Titanico-X saddle

We managed 36 miles on the tandem today. Our band closed out a festival in Connecticut last night so we had a late night, collectively getting less than 10 hours sleep! So we took it easy. Did some of our usual roads, Bedford to Chelmsford. Turned around at the Traveling Rhino

On the way back the bike didn't want to go into the big chainring. A quick check showed that the front derailleur cable was coming apart at the lever. I didn't want it to break completely lest it jump to the small ring and stay there until I adjusted the stop screw. So I avoided shifting the front, spun out the middle ring/small cog combination a few times, had to hoof our way up a few hills. But we made it back without too much trouble.

When we got back to Bedford another cyclist said "We've seen you three times today, once on the Bruce Freeman, once at Fern's, and now here. How do you manage to get everywhere ahead of us?" I should have told him we just know the shortcuts.

Ever replaced a cable on a tandem? It's a lot of work! When you have Simplex levers you start by checking where to cut one of those Jagwire cables which has a small knob on one end and a large knob on the other.

Then you have to snake it though all the connectors and wires under the keel tube.

Finally you run it to the derailleur and hope to get it tightened down just right.

Laying down on the job again I see!! Even with a stand it isn't easy trying to shift and watch/adjust the derailleur.

Nice Brava, how does it ride?

Sharp looking Bob Jackson!

I did 60 relatively flat miles today, just one 300 foot hill up from the river back home. Much of the ride was along the Gateway Trail (rail trails are great for heading into the wind with trees on both sides most of the way). Just off the trail is Park Tool. Also, we get a new bike lane over the Mississippi on the new HY 52 bridge. In typical MDOT fashion, one side of the bridge is about impossible to get to from that side's bike lanes, while the other is real easy.

Having just determined that my Veloflex Masters were OK durable for racy tires; I had a slow leak in my front tire after picking up some glass. Once I removed the glass I decided just to stop every 5 miles and pump it up a bit instead of changing it out on the trails.

Thank you. It rides wonderfully. It has become my most frequently used go-to bike for commuting. That's partly because it fits me so well. Also its 1st gen Cyclone derailleurs, Tektro brakes, 25mm Gatorskins on 32-spoke MA40 rims, Mavic 501 hubs. Everything just works.

Did you ever find a replacement for your Sport Six which broke?

No I got too busy working to worry about it. I am still looking from time to time though.

I rode 48 miles on the Gitane this afternoon. Mostly in Scituate and Foster. It was around 75 and windy again, but the sun was out!

I was able to get out on the 720 last night- but the fun thing was going out with our son on the 4th. I took my Voyageur SP and Junior took my Trek "735." We were about 5 miles out of town and the front derailleur exploded on him- the screw that holds the cages together came out. After around 10 minutes of searching we found the screw, at that time I didn't know there was another part- it's a 1st Gen Cyclone- I was able to steal the roller from a Suntour AR and it fits perfectly. I put a couple of dabs of clear nail polish on there to keep it from rotating out again.

i rode a short while with a guy with no legs.

i was just going up to the store and hopped on the trail. i was heading into a headwind and didn't feel the need to put it up into the big ring. then i saw him up ahead, and it was all i could do to catch up while keeping it on the small ring. i tried to draft behind him to help me out a bit, but he was so much lower than me that didn't work out too well. maybe he let up a bit, 'cause i finally caught up and we started talking. he looked to be in his late 20s, but who knows anymore. his shoulders were really cut; i guess that's what pedaling with your arms does for you. i was impressed. he asked about my davidson and said he had few vintage bikes like that. man, so many questions flew through my head. but before i knew it, my turn came up and i wished him well and went on my way. it was a mistake. i should have kept on going with him a while as he said he was going to do five more miles. that guy could teach me a few things. maybe i'll see him again.

Tool the Black Lightning for a 67 mile ride on the Chief Ladiga Trail from Anniston to the state line. The trail is an old train bed so it's mile after mile of flat road, not something common in Alabama.....

Great story!! It kind of reminds of that feature in the old Cyclist magazine The Marketing Man I think Steve ready wrote. he always had some adventure like that.

Thanks Dave.

Hope you're getting out on your various touring and sport touring bikes and enjoying the SE Wisconsin summer. I was down your way a few weeks ago, but only had time for 40 miles from West Bend to Slinger, then a few points north.

Got a solo thirty miler in on Sunday, nice ride, lots of folks out. I rode in the afternoon, so lots of families out on the trail, about ran over a youngster on a 24 inch triathlon bike, he got an earful from Dad about lane discipline!

I thought I was going to just walk this morning, I gave up running when I retired from the reserves, but I could hear the open road calling out to me. I had dusted off the Trofeo to ride next in line I grabbed her and some water and hit the road. I was trying to hit the 20 mile mark but alas it proved elusive again today I only got 19.4. I guess next week I'll have to start riding farther from the house to get it.

A nice view of one of the tank farms in the area.
