It's monsoon season down here in the PHX metro area. We had a Haboob hit us on the 21st, and left us rather dusty. At dawn yesterday, we got a big downpour which really helped to improve the air quality. I was itching to ride, so I geared up after dinner for a night time excursion. Bear in mind, some of my route is unlit. Not desired from a safety standpoint. I made do with two LED lights, one flood for nearby, and a CREE projector to light the road ahead. The CREE puts out about 180 lumens, but the pitch black conditions meant they were only 'adequate'. I normally use them on lit streets where they are more than enough.
The ride started in darkness for 2.5 miles, I ran into a pair of riders on horseback on the road! I only realized when one of them was waving a flashlight.
A mile of lit streets followed, then back to unlit road for another mile. I stitched this to my regular local route which is lit and much safer.
The cleared air and humidity made for a very pleasant ride, I wasn't struggling to get air and my output was strong and steady. I put in 22 miles last night in total. Luckily I brought extra batts for the return leg. Boy was it dark! I will need to research and develop a more brighter set up.

Yes, it's a good feeling to be riding more, lifts the spirit, there really is no substitute.
With the high temps, either I head out at the crack of dawn, or late evening. The night rides here have their detraction, but there is an adventurous feel to it...and no lathering up with sunscreen is needed.
I'll definitely consider dyno-lighting. The portable LED lights are fine from a weight-wienie perspective, but toting a pocket full of batteries defeats it.

A happy belated birthday to you! Congrats on your mtb-ing adventure. Nothing like successfully finishing a goal of this magnitude to affirm you're 55 years-young! Great pics as usual.

Thanks Grady and WNG for the birthday wishes
Rides on a warm summers evening are such a pleasure.
Yesterday evening I was riding in the woods with my son. He flew in from Denver for a surprise visit
Tonight I met up with some good friends for a nice ride around the valley after dinner.
Allan and I rode the HC100 last weekend.
It was nice to get out for an easy spin...Legs are still in recovery mode.

Wow, hard to believe you just turned 55, northbend! Happy Birthday - and many more.
Impressive ride to celebrate, too. Got me pumped for the MTB ride in mid-August in Ellensburg with scozim.
Always assuming my finger's healed up by then. While out for a ride around town this afternoon, testing out the Avocet pedals I got from toosahn a couple months ago, I trapped the tip of my left hand's middle finger between the cleat and the pedal edge, removing a nice little chunk.
The cleat slots were stubbornly failing to engage. When I reached down to feel for the problem, snick! Ouch!
After a few days of healing up I'll take the Dremel to the top edge - these Avocet cages are thicker than the Campy cages I've always run with my shoes. I already had to modify the hole on the front of the pedal to accept the guide tab on the Campy toeclips.
Nice solid platforms, though - and I think they're sealed bearings, too.

Bike is a Rivendell Bleriot... so not quite C&V, although it has a bunch of NOS parts, so maybe it counts!

Hard, tough workout yesterday so today's ride was going to be more mellow. Decided on the tank which equals a slow ride.
Heading up the hill where a black bear crossed in front of me last spring:
The junction - today's turnaround spot. The photo doesn't do it justice - but that hill to the right is almost 3 miles long and one of the steepest I've ridden in awhile - not today.
The great thing about riding in the hills on hot days is the cool off at the turnaround - unfortunately there were a lot of flies out this afternoon:

I put on Conti Town & Country's. Only rode them home from the LBS so far but they sure feel better. I'll take them for a longer ride tomorrow.

I rode out to West Greenwich RI and back today on the De Rosa. 57 miles on a nice sunny day. Not too hot for this time of year. 17.3 mph average, 1200' elevation gain.
Lewis Farm Rd
I love the tubular wheelset! Noticeably lighter.

^ I'm curious to try tubulars myself. I was lucky to pick up a C&V set of Campy Record hubs w/Ambrosio rims, a Regina 6 spd freewheel, plus the seller threw in a pair of tires, all for $45. This fellow from Jamaica Plain, MA considered it outdated and obsolete. I was happy to relieve him of them. Once overhauled, they'll go onto my Vitus, which sports Campy clinchers.
I had a toss-n-turn kinda night and couldn't rise at the crack of dawn to ride in reasonable temperature. But the riding gods were merciful and blanketed the area in clouds. Kept the morning a nice cool 91 F. (isn't it crazy to call low 90s cool?!?)
I decided to join the weekend warriors at Usery Rd, our local climbing spot. With only access to my Crosscut, I was 7 lbs heavier than my aluminum Trek. But I've lost 9 lbs physically, so technically, I should feel no difference. One thing nice was to have lower gearing available. Granny ring to the rescue.
The 13x21 cassette paired to the small triple crank allowed me to spin up the 3.5 miles comfortably.
I reached the summit and turned around to enjoy the descent. 21 miles total.
Not too many out at 9:30am, only half dozen bikers were at the course. Gotta get up at dawn next time.

My sweetie and I did about 40 miles on the Peugeot (that's C&V) tandem today. After our 1-night tour last weekend the bike felt like a feather. Got back to the car about 15 minutes before the rain/t-storm hit. It's raining hard now. I finished up re-building a '72 Bertin last night and was going to take it for a short spin. Ain't going to happen today... Boom! splat! pitter patter pitter hissssssss
Lunch stop. If you can't have a picnic the ride isn't worth riding!
On the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail
Second lunch in Carlisle Center (where all the good bikes go)

Rain, lungs, legs, and a 24t max cog had me turn around here, though I wanted to get at least to the middle of the canyon.
A nice downhill ride back to the valley....
These birds of prey were following me. Think they knew something that I didn't
Green Valley, AZ, btw. Aboard my '82 PSV-10.

Lot of future heartbreak, for sure. She's lovely!
We did about 25 miles on the tandem today. Cool, humid but pleasant.
Turned around in Chelmsford on the Bruce Freeman, and there was an elderly gentleman trying to pump up some bike tires with the pump at the repair station there. We asked if he needed help, he asked if that pump worked. I dunno' but I offered to help, seein' as how we carry a pump on the tandem. It's a vintage Solibloc provided by BF member rhm. So I pumped up his tires, the third time I've used that pump to help out someone else. This fellow said a friend had given him the bike after it sat unused for a long time, a Trek 700 I think it said. He thrown some oil on the rusty chain but apparently hadn't noticed that the tires were flat, then taken it to the BF to try it out. I think probably made out okay though.

Burkittsville Burner
So not today, but yesterday, I went for a short 16 mile ride with some guys that live near me. It wasn't a fast ride, as with all the hills around us it is difficult to do go very fast. of course, I'm not a very fast rider anyway. Anyway, the guys on the ride were all riding modern roadbikes and I was on my 1967 Carlton Super Race bike which I converted to an IGH recently. It has a SRAM i-Motion 9 hub which I like quite a bit. The bike is still not dialed in, but is much improved with the rando bars I installed recently after determining the stock bars were simply too deep and had far too much drop to be comfortable. The stem is the next item I will swap out as it is far too long for my liking. As far as the ride, I've not yet determined if the bike "planes" to the extent I would like, but I think it may be a suitable addition to the stable once I determine if it rides like a proper bike should. While I was waiting for the guys to show up I took a couple snap shots:
