Broke one link away from the power link, looks like an outer plate just gave out.I was pushing pretty hard on the pedals, up a slight hill, and suddenly the RD dropped the chain all the way to the small cog as the chain burst. (It had been miss-shifting for a bit beforehand.) My legs were shocked by having nothing to push against and I skidded a short distance but managed to unclip and get off. We were riding next to a nice older gentleman who had a chain tool (what luck!) but unfortunately his tool was missing the pin so it was useless (what luck!). He rode on and I ended up getting help from somebody else about 20 minutes later, and in the process teaching him how to fix a chain. All in all not a bad day, but I will definitely be switching out that chain.

This is part way up Mt. Hamilton on the way to Lick Observatory near San Jose. I had hoped to make it to the top, but I flatted a couple miles after this pic was taken and then snapped my Silca pump. 
So, I turned around rather than risk having to come down a 15 mile descent on an unglued spare tubular or getting stranded without a pump.

Sunday I rode to the new Neuse river trail from my house, then took it (~32 miles) to its end at the spillway/dam of Falls Lake, NC. The dam is ~50 miles riding to it that way. I rode the short way home through town (raleigh) for a total of 78 miles. Nice ride but I need to work on fuel / hydration management for that distance, I had to dismount once at mile ~60 because I felt quad cramps coming on. Made it home from there okay but I soft pedaled the rest of the way.

I rode my commute today. It was tough but rewarding. I've ridden a lot this week. Last night was band practice, which always means a late night. Plus I'd previously brought home from the office a thingy I'm working on, so I had to lug its weight back up the hills on the west bank of the Blackstone River. (It did fit into the handlebar bag though.)
On the other hand, about half an hour before I had to head for home I found the cause of an very obscure bug I was charged with fixing, something I've been chasing for a week. I then explained it to my boss, and the resulting conversation made me leave about 10 min later than usual. But I felt satisfied and happy.
Beer is good. A nice IPA. It's good to be home.

64 sunny miles on the De Rosa. I went through Foster into Killingly and Sterling CT. Some tough hills.

Steeple of South Killingly Congregational Church (1837) A nice Greek Revival church.
In CT I rode up Bear Hill Rd, Cook Hill Rd, Slater Hill Rd, Saw Mill Hill Rd and Gibson Hill Rd, but the hardest by far was Valley View Rd. It hurt.

The old bridge had been moved to the side like a giant steel and concrete lego.
I only had 1400' elevation gain, but I beat myself up on the hills. I tried to climb too fast I think.
