Welcome aboard, 76SLT! I see you are the proud owner of a Raleigh Wyoming... I would love to know what you think of yours.
Also, although I could ask the almighty Google, what can you tell us about your Crescent. I, for one, haven't heard of them... Thanks! -DQR Until a month ago, I had never heard of Crescent bicycles. I found it at a pawn shop. It had Campagnolo parts so I knew it was a good brand. They're from Sweden. Mine is a model Professional Competition 318. Not much out there on them. Crescent bicycles of Sweden Someone upgraded mine with a Campy Nuovo Record rd a Campy fd and gear shifters. It has a Reynolds 531 frame, Mafac Racer brakes, SR stem and handlebars, and a Sugino Mighty Competition drilled crankset. I had the guys at The Yellow Jersey set it up with some new tubulars. It's a lot of fun to ride. |

Thanks for the welcome! I've had the Wyoming for probably 20 years, but it's a little big for me so I've only ridden it a few times. It was very comfortable and fun to ride though.

Oh, and also, the guys at Yellow Jersey are true professionals. I've dealt with them in the recent past, and they have always delivered Quality, both service and product. And when you start a dialogue with Andrew, expect to be educated. |
I've only dealt with them the one time, but I was impressed. I brought the wheels up there to get some advice on tires. I was talking about it with a younger guy working there when Andrew just took one of the wheels in the back and started checking it over and telling me all about the make and the gears. He offered some good advice and convinced me to have him put on new tires, and a new set of gears, and have it ready in 90 minutes. They're the best so how could I say no. Great place to do business with.

It was 58 degrees in Chicago today, so I cracked off a 45-miler up the North Shore.
For part of the way, I was on a path the follows the right-of-way for the old North Shore Line. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4557/...b78e4e17_k.jpg Here's what it used to look like back in the day. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/712/3...07551d61_b.jpg You can still see the concrete anchors for the electric towers along the trail. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4542/...d762e96b_k.jpg And finally, here's the boat launch at Lake Forest. Pretty nice day overall, especially for early December. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4536/...5d4bd4d4_k.jpg |
Nice pics, Thinktubes! 'The times they are a changing...'

Got in a chilly ride on the fixed gear today on the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. Went down to foggy Carnation for lunch. The sun was shining when I got back up to North Bend

Sunday was a dreary day here in Saint Paul. I rode Velo de Ville down to the river - all roads here lead to the river at some point, it seems... But since the sky was grey and the lighting was so drab, I decided to get a little bit artsy.
https://i.imgur.com/IPrmtuA.png Since I treat most of my bikes as art projects, it only makes sense to photograph them that way: https://i.imgur.com/AusT4gM.png That area along the southern bank across from downtown has some fascinating architecture. This forest of light fixtures caught my eye: https://i.imgur.com/4mfzoAI.png https://i.imgur.com/fDKXxMr.png https://i.imgur.com/iuXWMc3.png Another rather distorted selfie, captured in the reflection from my bell: https://i.imgur.com/Jry3Irg.png I really need to start shooting more from the non-drive side. These get a little monotonous after awhile... https://i.imgur.com/KkZW8Cc.png Anyway, it was a short ride on a dull day, but at least something good came of it. Come to think of it, here are a few more shots sans bicycle: https://i.imgur.com/JHQ3Eue.png https://i.imgur.com/IhOKgTi.png https://i.imgur.com/NAecRD1.png |

Hardening off....
It's never easy but I KNOW that the best way to harden myself against the cold, to " thicken the blood", is to just get out there and do it! Yesterday was my picnic day - the one day a week I pack a simple lunch and go ride 40 to 60 miles, stopping somewhere to relax and eat that lunch. Cold as it was, iced up as the windshield was, I pressed on. The usual struggle to choose the ride had the Raleigh win out over the Crescent, this time. When I pushed off in Oaks, PA, it was 33 degF and I wondered if I'd brought the right layers. Low fog did not support the sunny forecast but press on I did, admiring that British chrome. Down the SRT to the Sullivan bridge then CCW around the trail that loops VF Nat'l Park.
I swooped by General Washington's HQ to ensure it was still there, then back up the hill to the Inner Defence Line Road. From the west, the first stretch of that road is a WICKED hill, an artery blower, heart attack, call the First responders type hill. But this 66 yr old fart got up it ok with no need to use the phone. It was the MK IV, not me. Good bike. Funny how it no longer felt so cold after that. Actually my layers worked out just great thru the day (42.@& miles), adjusting to the temps nicely. We linked on over to the Chester Valley Trail then blasted out to Exton with a stop at Exton Park for my picnic. The Raleigh rested from the load of two water bottles. Around here the parks are shutting down the water fountains for the winter so we have to carry two full bottles on long rides, no resupply anywhere. The return was as lovely as the trip outbound. Well into the 40's by the time I hung the Pro back on the car. Great day and I'm a bit more hardened for winter. Good timing. As has been mentioned above, a cold front is moving in and temps will not be uppa da 30s for a week or so. Got to keep riding thru it though. No snow here yet. No salted roads yet. |

Is no one riding lately? I'm missing the great photos and ride accounts. But, maybe the post about getting hardened to the cold is telling. Personally, my fingers have been too cold on my commutes to and from for me to really want to stop and snap any pictures.

Probably done for the year here in Chicago. We had a nice extended Fall, but high temps are in the 30s now. If I ride below 40 degrees, I get nasty bronchitis.
EDIT: here's a photo from my front window. Apparently it snowed last night -bleh. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4738/...e7ef1d25_h.jpg |

I'm goin' for it. Film at eleven... |
I'm still riding to work most days. Don't take pics most days though.
|
After three straight days of steady rain, and a snow dusting last night, today is supposed to be decent. High should approach 45*F here and it looks like a ride is happening this afternoon. Digging out my base layer top and other things now.

A Little Town & Country Action...
Rode my new winter bike for the first time on snow yesterday:
https://i.imgur.com/2qYk9hQ.png I intentionally sought out the iciest sections of road and sidewalks to test out the studded Schwalbe Winter Marathons. They work really well, and I think this winter-biking thing is going to be a lot of fun. Of course, I had to go here... https://i.imgur.com/QoTlvbr.png Now open all year! Then it was time to head out to the sticks: https://i.imgur.com/T1Ea4Zp.png https://i.imgur.com/TSO8mFR.png Thompson Lake is fully frozen-over now. I find myself wondering if the ice is thick enough... :innocent: Think I'll wait until I see signs of activity out there. My sense of adventure is tempered by caution these days. Must be that age thing. https://i.imgur.com/YHNLz2D.png It was a short ride, just to test the bike and my gear for the many frosty commutes to come. I think we're ready for Old Man Winter. Bring it on! https://i.imgur.com/mYHe7pp.png |
Nice Barracudda!!! @DQRider

Well, thank you VonRuden!
And it comes with a bonus feature: Every time I climb on and my foot touches the pedal, this goes through my head: https://i.imgur.com/dnZhsEj.png Think Beavis and Butthead: "DA-duh-duh-da duh-duh-da duh-duh-da duh-duh-da duh-duh-da duh-duh-da duh-DAAAAAAAAA"! Almost feels like bone conduction... :D |

More snow from today's ride.

I love seeing these snow pictures, here, from a safe distance.
It finally got "cold" (by our standards) last week, but this morning was unexpectedly warm, about 60°. So, I went out on another dawn ride on my Smoothie. https://photos.smugmug.com/Bike/Soma...2%20008-XL.jpg It rained for a few seconds last week. Other than that, the last rain we had was nearly five months ago. Last week's splash wasn't enough to change the dust situation. jhttps://photos.smugmug.com/Bike/Soma...2%20012-XL.jpg I kind of like leaving a cloud of dust behind me as I ride. https://photos.smugmug.com/Bike/Soma...2%20016-XL.jpg Some people have other ideas, I guess. :foo: https://photos.smugmug.com/City/Phoe...2%20028-XL.jpg |
