Props for finding an interesting IL ride. We are completely lacking that down here in Springfield. Id like to go camping up by Starved Rock and take the bike sometime. |
More like a run around to take care of errands before we get smacked by this hurricane. We are ground zero for landfall. I will be staying to take care of the homestead while the family heads up to Raleigh. as always, did get to swing by my favorite cafe’ for some beverage enjoyment. They will be closing later today for the storm’s duration. |

The area surrounding Starved Rock isn't all that interesting either, but there is the canal towpath that runs along the Illinois River that I've heard is a really nice ride. I believe it is called the Illinois and Michigan Canal Trail. |

I saw that landfall in Onslow County report, which puts us just north and west which is not the side we want to be on, Take care Law, and err on the side of caution !
Serious though, I am in a good area which does? not flood. Winds are another matter. I can take care of looters... |
I didn't ride yesterday.
It was the second day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. It's a time for reflection and pondering. Our rabbi led us in a silent hike and meditation at the Black Creek Preserve in Espous, NY, along the Hudson River. I didn't take my phone, but here are some images of places I was at. We crossed this very small suspension bridge for pedestrians. https://www.nynjtc.org/sites/default...?itok=gzEz-T5q The rabbi told us each to find a spot on our own to be alone for a half hour. This is the spot I chose, an image of which is taken from someone else's blog. http://www.adventuresaroundputnam.co...4/100_7513.jpg |
Wednesday was a beautiful day. Low 80's & low humidity. Talked the Rear Admiral into talking a day off work to hang out with me.
28 or so bike trail miles and a treat. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6a8673b15a.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2f36a164f3.jpg |
@eom Awesome looking tandem! Looks like a very nice day off. |
@eom, nice! Hmm, frozen custard or ice cream, tough choice.
Your tandem looks nice too. An observation and a question, if I may. Your timing chain looks really tight. Of course if either timing ring isn't quite centered on the spindle then the chain tightness will vary with the pedal position. Your cranks are out of phase by a tooth or two. Is that intentional? The traditional arrangement is to have them in phase, though some people put them 90deg out of phase because it is supposed to give a smoother power output. (I keep ours in phase because it means I always know the pedal position my sweetie is dealing with. Also because if I put them out of phase I wouldn't know which should be ahead of the other.) |

Rode my newest old bike from Saticoy, near Ventura, CA, 32 miles RT out to Santa Paula thru Aliso and Wheeler Canyons. I got this '78 Peugeot from local Craigslist just over a month ago. After a little wrench twisting, I've done a little over 100 miles on it. I'm enjoying the ride, lively, yet pretty comfy on the country roads. They have some great murals out in Santa Paula, great Cajun French food at Rabelais, too.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ab9c569a1c.jpg |
Got to take some nice late Summer rides around Fairlpay CO 1st time in about a year nearly all of the forest roads are open.

Dang, that is pretty high up there! I suppose one acclimatizes to the altitude.

Enjoyed a fast 30 miles in perfect weather on the PX10. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...34a632f27.jpeghttps://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e2f4cdde6.jpeg |
Took the tandem out for saddle testing. Rear Admiral is seeking nirvana.
After a while I was ordered into port. She who must be obeyed! https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...edebc5ef38.jpg |
Spotty rain for days here in Central VA as we await more wet from the hurricane pounding NC. I took the cross bike out due to the wet weather. Vintage in name only. I rode up to the Ragged Mountain Reservoir outside Charlottesville. About a mile of gravel before a stiff 10% climb up to the dam. They pumped out some of the water anticipating a deluge from the storm but looks like we'll be getting much less. I then rode back across "Grounds" of University of Virginia - you must not say "campus" or you will get your wrist slapped. I always make sure to say "Grounds" with an upper class English accent. Football field is bare and unpainted as tomorrows game against Ohio got moved to a neutral site. Quick stop at Jefferson's Rotunda before riding towards downtown and ultimately back home.

Consult a map prior
For my first post in this thread I present to you the following:
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a95dc8f610.jpg Farm country road https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0381def5ae.jpg Stopped here at this church to eat a snack since they had benches outside. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9cf180127d.jpg Sheepses. Unlike the goats I had passed earlier (and was too far to get a pic of), these sheepses were not interested in making conversation. (Yes I know the plural of sheep is sheep but sheepses is more fun to say.) This was a 30 mile route that I made into a 41 mile route by missing two turns. :twitchy: By the end, I was in this state of mind: https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f462b142ef.jpg They had to put a sign and everything. |
The dry summer has ended!
Weather has become more seasonal here in Puget Sound. That means finding dry periods to ride between frequent showers. Today’s ride started in a very light sprinkley time. The air was so full of water it was like riding in a fog or mist. My lungs noticed a difference when starting out. Trail and side trail scenes from wet western Washington State. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0834be0ca.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f271a8006.jpeg Tifosi wear. Ohhh - I like yellow accents. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...93d2f9c99.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4b9640ec1.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...833d1b6e0.jpeg Always a river not too far away. Tho this year with 3cm of rain from May thru August, some rivers are presently more like very wide streams. Exception being some glacial fed watersheds. The Tubers sign warnings were for naught this season, as any adult could wade the river in most spots by Aug. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...22e40de30.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...deac9c989.jpeg |
She's apples
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...228f627d51.jpg
Stopped for some apples by the byway. The hot dry summer has made the apples much smaller this year. The bees did their job and there are plenty to begotten - just smaller |
