Rode to Brooklyn, Queens, Randall's Island and back to Manhattan. noglider met me and we rode to a park in Brooklyn where he played bike polo (!!). I watched a round and took pictures, then left him and rode north through Greenpoint, Long Island City and Astoria, and back to Manhattan via Randall's Island.

Wow! Did you photograph any of the polo match? I'm constantly intrigued by the images you guys post from NYC. My Minnesota upbringing tells me that NYC is Bad-Bad-Bad! And everything I see in the media shows me an overcrowded, vulgar, angry, and unwelcoming place. But everyone who posts to the Bike Forums from New York City seems to be smart, reasonable, and witty. What am I missing here?

I did take pictures, since they're all of noglider I didn't presume to post them until he sees them. Tom - if you approve, let's see 'em. I have to say, the young 'uns that run the polo games are a super-friendly and welcoming group.

DQRider we have all of the above. You want vulgar, angry? You got it! You want smart and reasonable? No problem!

Tom and I were talking about the NYC experience as experienced by non-New Yorkers today as we dodged left hooks riding downtown on Ninth Avenue. New York is a big, busy, 24x7 place. It can be overwhelming to folks accustomed to a different pace. Our diversity is probably our greatest asset. I've been lucky enough to travel around the world and there aren't many places where people of every walk of life co-mingle so readily. For all our hurry and intensity we tolerate and take care of each other, especially when times are bad. All other times, just don't slow me down. I got stuff to do.

If you ever visit, let me know. There's an awful lot to see.

Hey Brent, did you get out with the search crews?

billnuke1 02-24-20 12:18 PM

Hit the Cape Cod Canal for about 11miles...55*! Got the light 15-20mph Cape Cod breeze...pushed me all the way home for a change...I usually ride later in the day and the breeze and I turned around at the same time...in my face both ways!

Thanks, it's one of my better efforts.

Nice photo, Narhay. What part of the eastern waterfront trail is this at? Curious as to your route. Did you ride out from the west end or downtown T.O, along Kingston Road through Scarborough until the trail begins again after Guildwood? The Waterfront Trail's eastern gap from the Beaches to Guildwood makes traveling by bike out of the city in that direction a bit difficult.

I feel the same way as you, I've spent my whole life in the Great Plains or the Midwest.

My biggest surprise is always how much green space I see in our NYC Bikeforums members' pictures!

It shouldn't be since I feel like access to green spaces is a fundamental need of human beings and they will design that into wherever they live, but I still can't get the stereotypical concrete monolith idea of NYC out of my head.

I don't know how he got there but that's the Leslie Street Spit parkland. It goes quite a ways out into Lake Ontario.

Cheers

I've got to come down and ride with you, Bill. We still have snow and ice up here!

billnuke1 02-27-20 04:40 PM

Yup...got relatives up that way...we are still looking over our shoulders...can’t imagine no snow...I do a lot of my riding on the weekends...

The Other Day

I can't complain about the temperatures in February where I am in NC (compared to what I had in Long Island NY 5 years ago)!
Short ride by the scenic weeds section of my local Greenway... which will eventually be green.

Cold chill came back to the Northeast today. Was 26F when I left the house but roads were clear of salt and ice and the brooks still babbled.https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...596a9cedd1.jpg

zukahn1 02-28-20 11:04 AM

Haven't posted many ride pics lately because rides have been largely short boring and snowy here in the Rockies the last month or so. Mostly just a few miles on the few back roads that somewhat clear the bike path and trails are under about 4 feet of snow right now.

Actually I just happened to find the shovel on the small part of the bike path that was clear. Nice shovel that some discarded so I just strapped it to my bike and brought it home and fixed it up bit. At this point I'm never really surprised at the stuff I find on along the side of the road or the bike path.

Went for a spin around the river with a riding buddy who hadn’t seen my new-to-me Raleigh on the road yet. “I’ve got something sorta old I can ride,” he says. Shows up on an Eddy Merckx with full Dura Ace. Where’d that come from?!?!
