Nice Treks. Biopace chainrings and Mountech derailleurs might make it middle to late eighties. I have one of those Avocet touring saddles. They're not bad. I wore mine out.

Bashermax, nice Superior score. I keep hoping and dreaming I'll find one for pennies.

58cm or so? Afilado did a nice polish up on a very similar superior - albeit one with worse decals - and he said it rides real good.

There is a small older Mongoose mountain bike sitting by my trash currently. No wheels, but not in terrible shape. Altus derailleurs, chro-mo frame and fork. I'll take pictures of it and post them here tomorrow, if anyone wants it I'll salvage it.

Found a Raleigh Sprite in my area on CL for $20. Guy said he had cleaned it a little and put on a couple of new cables, too. It is Coffee color. Eventhough the rims are steel and cranks are cottered, I could not resist getting a bike with touring bars and fenders already in place. It seems to be a '76 and has a head badge announcing Made in Nottingham, England.The paint needs touching up some places. any suggestions, which paint to use for a good match? From the blurb on Sheldon Brown' s page on this bike, the color is named Flamboyant Coffee.

We were both happy with the transaction. The Nishiki frame is a 25" (63 cm) late 80s Nishiki Sport. The Sport, I think, was at or near the bottom of the Nishiki hierarchy. This frame says Made in Taiwan so I'm assuming it's made by Giant. Nice lugged frame, 4130 frame & unicrown fork, cast dropouts, really not too bad except that it's maybe a little heavy.

Although the ad says the paint was in "very good condition", it really wasn't that hot and I'm going to repaint it. I've sanded it down some and removed the decals except for the headbadge decal (I'm partial to Nishikis) and the 4130 decal on the seat tube. I'll just repaint it black but I think I'll pinstripe the lug outlines, and try to mask around those decals.

The seller threw in some aero brake levers and some derailleurs and stuff, and I have some wheels, brakes and handlebars I can use. This will be my first build from the frame up, and my first rattle-can job. If I like it I'll keep it; if not I'll flip it.

I found A Schwinn Tourist in the dumpster it has nice and clean rims on it and every thing works it needs new tires and the seat and seat post is missing it does have the ratchet style crank on it and i have never seen one like this and body have any info on this thing

It's a Shimano system; I forget what it's called but someone will be along shortly who knows no doubt. I believe that places the bike in the late 70s. You should be able to see either a serial number on the head tube or a date code stamped in the headbadge to figure out the date exactly.

Nice catch on the tandem, the wife and I are looking to trade this one up for a few more gears. It was given to me from my dad. He got it at an auction for $5.00. I gave it a rattle can paint job and tune. It's a great neighborhood cruiser.

Nothing special here aside from the fact that it doesn't seem to have ever been ridden.

Everything appears original and in good shape (including the bar tape), there's no wear on the rims and just a lot of paint chips and surface rust that I'm guessing are from storage over the years.

I picked up a Schwinn Tourist out of a dumpster today it's is pretty good shape some scratches I need to find a seat and seat post and the back fender reflector is missing

Going to look at some "Free bikes!" today which means (more than likely) dealing with a creepy person who will be upset when I don't take one/all of the bikes home with me.

I can't tell what the first one on the pile is other than it is close to my size. I need a rain bike, so wish me luck that one of them will fit the bill (not likely but always a possibility!)

You can remove the front freewheel system and change it out for any english thread cotterless crankset and bottom bracket. The bottom bracket cups will come out with a early slined shimano freewheel tool.

Picked this up today, paid 99 cents! The frame is probably junk. Besides the decals/paint being trashed, there's a couple of dents. Suppose I'll just part it out.

hey, fwiw, those are great frames...either in steel or aluminum. I've got two of 'em - circa mid-90s models. I'd gladly double your money on it! :)

Great score for the those components. LX group would make for a nice touring set up on another frame.

The only LX component that could be used in a Touring set up from those is the RD. That's about it. The crank is too compact for touring and this FD can be used only with compact cranks. Shifters and breaks are MTB specific as well.

Regardless, I agree that this is an excellent score. Those were some sweet hardtails back in the day.

I am going to have to beg to differ on that. Older MTBs very often had 28/38/48 cranksets which would work perfectly fine on a touring bike. I have also seen a number of touring bikes built up with a normal MTB triple as well (42-44/32/22). The front derailleur and rear derailleurs will work without a doubt as would the canti brakes. The shifters and levers will work if a flat bar is used on the touring/road bike. So basically almost everything could be used on a touring bike.
