Update on this beater no one (Bike shop, Goodwill, Neighbors, Bikeforum "pay it forward", Craigslist "Free") wanted, including me. Saved from my dump!

Local pick-up only - San Pedro, CA

I will give this a few days and when no one claims it, I will hand it to the scrap truck Edit: Hyperbole - I was trying to get a reaction, I was hoping for "I'll save it" but got "how dare you!", fair enough:) never thrown away so much as a rusty bolt! Sorry to create the unnecessary concern

Special Steel L1011 - 22" frame US Express - missing bolt on front brake, everything else is there.

That person is not me though -- hope somebody rescues this from the scrap bin

I second the suggestion to donate it rather than scrap. If there are any bike shops nearby that deal with vintage I’m sure they’d be glad to take it off your hands. I’d grab it for sure if I wasn’t 2500 miles away.

I would keep the wheels too if they are ok like they seem.

Too bad it is a claw RDO, apparently a BSO trait too far. :twitchy:

And its a big one, can be good or bad. :D

Too bad, in the zone where the cost of repair is more than it's worth. I fix these and give them away but I've got a stash of used parts. I'd at least give it some time at the curb with a free sign.

So, I broke down another Peugeot ATB, which provided some parts to make this one whole. Dug through the garage and found 2 functional (non-matching) tires and used tubes to replace the ones rotting off this bike. Added some missing brake parts (cable attachment bolt & straddle cable) to front brake. Adjusted straddle cables lengths and cable tension, brakes working. Took a test ride, seat moved (post and angle) shifters wouldn't get to all cogs front or back. Adjusted limit screws, got both shifters working (kind of amazing how well these low end shifter work). Went back through photos to confirm this seatpost came with bike, as bought, confirmed, but seatpost is slipping (so wrong post). Seatpost clamp is fully closed and still slipping, added "beer can shim" now stays snug.

So now it is a functional bike, it will be back on the road and have another life.

Done OK lately. First I noticed pedals in the take-off box. Pulled them out and asked "do you really think anyone will want these?" "No. But they'd look good with chrome toe cages."
"That's me. I have a pair." So they came home. MLS New AR-2. Note the dust caps that I've removed. It looks like no one on the web knows how to remove them. The 4 pin wrench holes are an affectation, no function at all. You must pry the plastic caps out, not threaded. Also almost no grease inside though very clean otherwise. I'll rebuild them next winter.

Then I saw this bike in the boneyard pile. I looked closer and found a lugged Trek 930. So I stuffed it into the car, thinking I'd find someone to give it to. Upon closer inspection I realized it was a 1993 930, last of the lugged Trek mtn bikes. And it's the same size as my 1995 Trek 850. But this frame is intriguing. Still thinking but I have visions of keeping it and moving either it or the 850 to Charlotte and giving my 820 to my grand daughter. She is ready for 26" wheels and trigger shifters.

And that seat post still has 4.5" in the frame, well above the min line. This 18" frame gives me a comfortable reach too. I've done MANY miles on my 850. It suits me.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5ec21a8f4.jpeg

I've just wiped off the dirt and cobwebs and torn the rotten saddle cover off. Oh, and sluiced out the shifters with light oil so they do work just fine now. Some people give up too easily.

Today a friend of mine wanted me pick up a bike he had found on marketplace.
It turned out to be a british raleigh record ace. I had one in the past but that frame was too small for me, this one fit me perfectly. after a bit of persuading my friend let me have it.
payed 140 usd for this one.

Nice score, what is going on on this pic? What is attached through the brake bolt and clamped to the stays? And a second bracket farther down the stay? My brain can't make any sense out of this, seems janky on a bike this nice, any idea?

It looks like a wheel lock, poorly installed

Now it seems obvious and makes more sense, didn't want the nice bike stolen.

Mr.Toolbox 06-09-24 03:54 PM

I'm going to remove all of that. It has an old lock, light holder and reflexes.

I don't know, a bike with "reflexes" might be nice, mine aren't what they used to be

Korina 06-09-24 09:24 PM

That is a pretty, pretty 930.

Cool. Remind him that if he takes care of it he can pass it on to his grandkids. If he's a typical kid/teen it'll be stolen before the end of the year. :thumb:

I purchased this a couple days ago from a local online auction site. I submitted a crazy low bid and won. It is an '82 Schwinn Super Sport in excellent condition. I did a complete rebuild. Changes I made: I put on a period correct saddle for the newish one that was on it, swapped out the 5 speed freewheel for a 6 speed and removed the clipless pedals and replaced them with platform pedals. The Super Sport was considered a touring bike in that time period. I have less than $20 invested in it. I will take it out for a ride then probably pass it on.

This Jeunet had sat on Nextdoor for a while. Sold a couple of bikes so I had room. Said he bought in 1970. Tubular's are shot but otherwise in good condition. Asked if he anything else he was getting rid of...

Not sure of the story other than he raced Formula until they aged him out. He didn't seem happy about it but noted it was a selfish sport.

Oooooh, Marlboro livery, very cool. I'm guessing a two litre Cosworth setup.

wrt 1970 date for Jeunet -

the model of Juy Prestige shift levers worn by the cycle nominally launched in 1970 but did not come in on any new cycles until the 1971 model year

the machine's Prestige model rear mech Nr. AR637 will probably exhibit a month and year date marking
would expect either 1972 or 1973 due to Beacon's establishment of a branch in Oakland, California

Yes, he did say he purchased in 72-73, in Stockton.
