Tiny = 42cm c-t-t, smallest size offered. It has 26" wheels, XO-3 had 700c wheels in '92, then 26" in '93 &'94

Korina 07-14-24 12:04 PM

Wow, that is tiny. Too tiny for me even, so I can just admire with no lust in my heart. Great score for someone.

Have zero knowledge on these old CF frames, but looks to have no damage, and overall condition is quite nice, seems to be well taken care of.

It’s my size so it’ll be a rider.

Nice find, I would have grabbed it too! While it is carbon it's not very lightweight, which is ok actually since it was the thick carbon tubes that made it weigh more but that thickness has made them last a very long time, far longer than today's carbon frames will last; hey came in at around 22 pounds, which is as heavy as most of my steel bikes. The only issue you have is the aluminum fork, some called those the fork of death, but when they fatigue, and they will, it could fail. If you have an expert near you that check out the condition of the fork you might want to do that, with a typical riding person those forks were good for about 8 to 12 years, it's way past that, but if the bike wasn't ridden much then it could be good for awhile. Have it checked out, and keep an eye on it for cracks or if the fork feels like it's going soft, you can find a lot of CF forks for that bike.

Not quite the dump, but...

My local high school has some sort of bike donation program, that as far as I can see is just a big shipping container that may or may not contain a bunch of bikes. Also, it looks like the kids who originally came up with the idea have long since graduated, and so I'm not sure if it is still active. Anyway, sitting outside the container, up against a fence and just rotting in the elements is a Nishiki Olympic. The frame is in decent shape, red and white paint, listed a 4130 Chromo Double Butted (I believe). Components are a mix of Shimano, with Joytech hubs... nothing special.

So the bike looks decent and I feel like it's a shame just having it rot away like that... or potentially be sent who knows where (I can imagine anyone ever fixing it up as part of some program). Should I "save" it? I definitely don't need it, and I'm doubt it would find much riding time, if any, for me, so should I just fix it up a bit and give it away? I'd feel bad selling something that was ostensibly donated to a bike give-back program, even if I suspect someone just dumped it there because they thought someone else would take care of it.

(And yes, I realize I'm in the NYC area, so I could probably throw a new chain and tires on it and sell it to a hipster for some silly amount, but I wouldn't feel right...)

Juvela: Magnitude ?? Well, it used to seem like 3 figures to me......but it's probably in the mid 2 figures now that she's retired. So class her as an Imelda-wannabe now.
Pics ??:lol: None as yet.....but I was really worried when she started to have eyes for Jimmy Choo......but fortunately that enthusiasm died an early death.

Had that same recumbent, r40? Couldn't get comfortable with that steering. How are you on it?

Smokinapankake 07-23-24 03:53 PM

Looks similar to my ‘94 Norco Nitro. The fork seals are still available; I just took measurements and ordered on Amazon. Worked great! Good luck with the seatpost; that looks like a pretty cool bike!

This thing has been yard art at a neighbor's place for at least the 11 years we've lived here and I found it at the curb after landscaping people removed the tree trunk it had been leaning against. I posted a pic of that pose years ago. Anyway, I never got close to it before and would not have bothered to bring it home except that it's a very early Schwinn Continental with a three-piece crank and a chainwheel denoting its Arnold, Schwinn & Co origins. The bike is probably older than I am, being a 1950 model myself.

I don't want it but I figure one of you guys might, so PM me.

He was going to have his yard guys come back and take it to the dump so this was a literal save. I shot some lube into the headset and crank and they move surprisingly well, a shock after at least a decade outdoors. I can get more detailed pix. The chainguard and nice-looking fork appear to be chromed. I hope someone wants it for its history because its looks will indicate "junk" to a mere civilian.

Closest thing I've found to it in the catalogs. Pretty impressive specs for a bike that old but this Continental might not be as good. Don't let it go to waste.

I bet someone would want the schwinn just for the badge

They're welcome to it but will need to take the whole carcass so it's out of my garage.

thumpism 08-02-24 11:51 AM

To help with the identification I got a couple more pix. Removing the headbadge reveals a medium metallic blue paint that is probably original. Dropped one of those two tiny screws, of course, and will likely never see it again.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...406698c36e.jpg

Same blue shows where the bolt-on kickstand was. No built-in Schwinn unit here so either the frame predates that usage or was a nice enough frame not to get one.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7f4d5c67b0.jpg

Folks over on The Cabe seem to think it's a '42-ish Schwinn New World bike with a badge swap and later fenders. Serial number offers only a general idea since a factory fire in the forties destroyed all the records. Not important but it would be nice to know, and I've already invested too much energy into a bike I don't intend to keep. Let me know if you want it.

Well, has two wheels...spotted in a cleanup pile on today's ride. Still there when I drove back. Wheels were flat but they hold air.

Very cool. We have a plywood-and-conduit Garden Way cart that gets a lot of use, plus a molded four-wheel Gorilla Cart. The folding feature is really nice.

Not me, but my son... Grabbed this Gitane (Tour de France?) from an industrial equipment auction. Yes, the net was part of the lot. ;)

I love this orange color on these '92 Comps (plus it's got thumbies). All I ever see at garage sales are baby clothes and elderly lady knicknacks.

If you're near a campus some tall, semi-broke freshman would probably be happy to get that bike.

sbrudno 08-19-24 06:59 AM

Assuming that you gave the $20 pitch, this was a great find. Lots of ways to go with it: add new stuff, put whatever you have to attach on it or get on Facebook or eBay to get the rear wheel. Saddle looks a bit sad though...

On my way to Herbor Freight to price a pancake compressor, I need one now with ALL the bikes I have and my 95 Jeep.

I get 3 houses away from my driveway when I see a box…
I stop, push it, it’s heavy, lift the lid and inside is the object of my desire! Unused, never been out of the box compressor ready to be hauled back to my house. Only thing I need is a hose and air attachment. $16 at harbor freight for the kit.
Went to check to see if they sell 1 1/8 ball homes for seat tubes, they don’t!
