I'll say! What is the backstory on these finds?

Picked up this 1989 ST400 locally. Very good price. Someone had this set up as a hill climber with that Megarange freewheel on the rear.

oh my gosh, that's the exact model I wish I had never sold! Looks to even be my size too.

This will be a flipper if you are in the Md,Va, or WV area. After I do a complete rebuild and tune. It has some rough spots, but still has potential. Solid bikes.

Nope, I'm in Oklahoma. Those Cannondales had terrible paint. Not durable at all.

You're right about that, at least in that era. If you look closely, you can see my repainted fork in this pic is not a perfect color match. About half of the paint had already flaked off the steel fork when I picked this thing up a couple years ago. For some reason, the alloy frame's paint stuck to it much, much better and was actually in pretty good shape. Anyway, the bike cleaned up nicely enough for me to make a $100+ on the flip. :)

Very nice! Is there a story behind how you got all this?

Just when I thought I'd seen it all...

Just when I thought I'd seen it all... Couple fixer-uppers MTBs alongside the bike path, marked "FREE" with masking tape. One was a hi-ten Fuji just a step above dept. store, but worth cleaning up to give to someone. Other one is the worst-named bike of 1990 - a Giant Butte. Nothing real special, low-end gruppo, but a nice frame, perfect candidate to gravel-ify.

So both bikes were missing the rear tire. Didn't take much notice until I went to put a tire on the wheel from the Giant, and discovered this:

For a while my brain was stuck in "what's wrong with this picture" mode. Then it hit me - dude had been RIDING on it with no tire, Good Morning Vietnam - style, obviously for several miles. No big loss - cheap nutted-axle hub and non-stainless spokes - but still, whiskey tango?

I would be inclined to reach out to Dave Guettler @ River city bicycles, he has one hanging up in his collection, great guy, always up for a talk. :thumb:

Yes. This bike has the 3rd gen of the aluminum fork. I’m curious of the ride, so I’ll take a spin or two locally before switching to a steel replacement.

TireLever-07 01-14-19 03:40 AM

Viscount,, Lambert,, made their own brakes & drivetrain components too. That's a press fit BB spindle. Like many Kleins. So, if its rides ok,, shifts, might be fine. They used aerospace tubing, try to sell a lighter bike. But everybody remembers that fork. But freewheel explosions, (Had 2) put me off from buying any old bikes.

Picked up two Co-Motion Americanos from a lovely retired couple who toured across the country on them. I'll likely be selling the red one locally to cover the cost of both and just keep the blue one as it's my size.

What an awesome couple. Enjoy!

Super confused about the seatposts.

I think they are suspension type seat posts to take some of the roughness out of off-road riding. They took these things everywhere.
