I had picked up this bike today, could you help me with identification?
It seems like it's a late 80's high-end German bike. It has aluminium wheels (Weinmann), cranks (Shimano Silstar) and sprockets, a 6x2 speed Sachs-Huret Commander shifter (6 speed) with Sachs HT internal shifter (2 speed). Drum brakes, a handlebar with a globe and a bike racer in it, size 630 Continental tires, a huge front light with "Halogen" written on it and it has a 7 character S/N under the saddle.

Hard to tell from one picture, but what makes you think its German. As to high end, the parts don't indicate that.

The drum brakes are highly unusual. The levers look low end.

The front light is probably added later.

Silstar is SR, not Shimano.

+10 The "german" bike is not high end. Silstar, stem shifters, steel seat post, etc., indicate towards the low end.

He told there was a a bike in the shed and asked me if I'd like him to bring it in to work. He only knew it was a Raleigh. This is what he showed up with. I'm going to keep it and use it for fun rides and such. I'd like to know about when it was made.

Bikedued 08-26-14 04:33 PM

I would LOVE that drum brake wheelset. Very cool.,,,,BD

Bikedued 08-26-14 04:37 PM

Whoa, that is nice. I guess the two headbadges on the head tube and seat tube was an English thing? My Geoffrey Butler has the same exact thing. Almost the same color too, and same lugs but in chrome.,,,,BD

Trying to figure out who'd be dumb enough to throw that out. Some people have no snap whatsoever.

My catch from late last Summer, and pretty much my best catch ever(unless you count the chrome P15 that was too small).:(

A rough guess of 83-85 from me anyway. I kind of lose touch on Raleigh paint scheme's after 80-81.,,,,BD

I paid too much but I wanted it.

1984 Schwinn Tempo frameset off eBay. Has some scrapes but no dents or rust, paint is shiny and the headset and bottom bracket are in great shape. Have gently used mid-90's RSX triple crankset, front & rear derailleurs, 3 X 7 brifters and caliper brakes to go on it. It's getting cleaned and put together with all it's "patina" intact, just need a decent set of 27 inch wheels & tires, stem, bars, seatpost and saddle.

Bikedued 08-26-14 07:35 PM

I saw that, and was VERY tempted. That's the earliest Tempo I've personally seen.,,,,BD

I'd put Cyclone M-II on it. Just me though.;)

Thanks for not giving in to temptation! :D :thumb: I almost pulled the trigger on it when he had it listed before but held off. When he relisted at the lower price I took a gamble and just bid the opening amount figuring I'd get blown out of the saddle. I definitely did NOT need another project but it was calling my name. Date code on the head badge indicates it was built July 10th of 1984. I like the idea of the Cyclone hardware but I already had the RSX group and it needed a home. It's also my dress rehearsal for an '83 Super Sport frame I'm going to restore and outfit with Ultegra components. I'd love to find one of these in mint original condition but my bike buying is done for awhile. No, really....... I mean it.:lol:

This is going to build up really nice, can't believe that someone would throw that out

The Browns sticker means that more than likely this is a Canadian built Raleigh. They opened the plant in 1973, I would second the guess of 1983-85. We might have a better guess if we see the components, like the derailleur.

Wasn't so much in to classic steel when I found it, and it was just another thing to take to France, so it went for a very small amount on Ebay. Actually had a look for the buyers email the other night in case he wanted to sell it back to me...

I'll post a pic of the derailleur later. I did check the serial number against an online source, it's RD604422 Raleigh Serial Numbers & Charts

I drove an hour each way to pick up a 1973 Schwinn Super Sport with a 23" frame(which is more or less my size). It needs a bit of work as it came with a dead rear derailleur and came without a chain. It's also missing the rear brake line. In the interest of keeping costs down, I am going with a Shimano TX35 RD. It does have the original Atom pedals and the rear shelf. The front wheel looks to be salvageable but the rear wheel may not be.

Just bought this early '90s O'Brien at a garage sale. Local small-time framebuilder; so small, in fact, that there is zero info online. Unfortunately, it's much too small for me:cry:.
Edit: Just got a reply from the framebuilder--it's Columbus SL with Cinelli lugs. Why can't it be a 56??:cry:

Profits from this bike should fund the 56cm bike of your choice. Personally, I much prefer finding bikes that are NOT my size. It makes letting them go so much easier.

Most of the time the bikes they have are department store mountain bikes but when I looked down I saw "Cannondale". I was lucky he had the red light. I honked for him to pull over and asked how much for the bike. He asked more than the scrap value but it was well worth it to me I think. I assumed the wheels where 700c but I was wrong. The tiny bike has 650 x 23 tires. Its missing the seat post, pedals, chain and rear derailleur. I have a spare 105 in my parts bin and I should be able to come up with a seat and post pretty easy. Wheels spin smooth, no hops but need to be trued a bit. I hope the grip shifters work. She is a 1993 R700 TT Tri bike, very small. I could not let her get melted. Should be a fun bike to fix up. http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb7b1dc11.jpghttp://i951.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps193d1f0d.jpghttp://i951.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps0ae1cc21.jpghttp://i951.photobucket.com/albums/a...psc3c6cda9.jpghttp://i951.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb55386e3.jpghttp://i951.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps08063da4.jpg

Maybe you should check with the people at the scrap yard, Steve. Did you see this bike with Campy components that a new member bought for $5 at a scrap yard? The bike has an M&M Cyclery sticker on it so the yard is probably somewhere in Chicagoland.

I think I should just hang out at the yard. I picked up a 1973 Raleigh Professional Track Frame and Fork with a Campy headset for $10 a few months back. I keep my eyes open when the scrap trucks go by me. :)

My Schwinn collection has been growing lately. I recently decided that like any good Schwinn collector I should have at least one Varsity in the bunch and that I should snag the next one that comes along cheaply. So here it is as found, I purchased this yesterday for $25 off of Craigslist but let's pretend I saved it from the dump. It should clean up pretty nicely:

Now if only I could find a nice old Paramount for $25 to represent the other extreme in the Schwinn line up.

rjhammett 08-31-14 10:32 PM

I had a productive weekend picking up bikes. I doubt that any of the early 90s bikes I bought were headed for the dump but all three were collecting dust. I dropped a total of $120 for a '91 Bridgestone RB-T, a '94 Bianchi Osprey and a '94 Trek 850. I will be busy for a couple weeks getting them all cleaned up, lubed and tuned. I had a week or two with nothing to work on and was going through withdrawal so I am now happy. I will post pictures once they have been rehabbed.

rjhammett, it's a long weekend. It's not over yet. Get back out there and dig up more bikes! :) Seriously, nice haul.

Sunday bargains

First purchases for me in nearly two months. A Swedish equivalent to a PX10, Reynolds 531, less than $100. Tubular with Nuovo Tipo hubs, Mafac Racer, and Stronglight 93.

Cannondale ST400(?) Paint is scuffed here and there, but I'm not complaining, for less than a Ulysses Grant portrait.

Great bike, I know you posted it a couple weeks ago. How's the progress coming on it?
