;Doohickie - those bikes are both pretty sweet, throw them this way if you have to throw them back . I think the Herc is great, it has a cruiser type flair, but still looks very english in a stately way. The decals and paint don't look half bad either, I can't remember what year TI bought Raleigh but that bike is right on the cusp, I think the dropouts are a clue. That sears bike is very interesting, I wonder who manufactured the bike for sears? My Norman was badged as a western flyer (with Norman decals)

Anyways, Nice catch and glad you got them and showed them. My wife is not crazy about bikes either, but I got this old beat up cruiser and she is all excited to ride. Maybe she just needs a bike that calls out to her?

Matt

That Hercules is pretty bangin'. I'd love to get a bike like that for cruising around with my GF when I finish her Schwinn. Too bad it's probably too small for me and also too far away.

Here's a picture of the Herc next to my Raleigh DL-1 (in the back); the Raleigh is really a little small for me, so you can see how small the Herc is for me:

Also, the original owner was wild in his younger days- he put a pretty b!tch!n' skull & crossbones on the downtube:

Like I said, it's quite small; seat tube from crank center to top of seat tube is just over 20". I just measured the standover and it's 31" (as opposed to my DL-1's 34"). The bike in your avatar is kind of small though... do you want me to see much shipping to Cold and Snowy WI is?

Back to the Sears bike; based on the Lark derailleur, I think it's a 1969 or 1970 model.

You're lucky. My wife only likes shiny new things. She wants a Masi Soulville 10. *sigh*

The market for that Hercules might surprise you once you get it all clean and shiney, you've got people here lining up for it already.
What tire size does it have?

Both bikes have 26 x 1 3/8.

Besides the missing chain, I also discovered a crank arm is bent (twisted) on the Herc. I think the Sears is a clean-n-sell; the Herc is a project.

There's a crappy dept. store mt. bike with a sold sticker, and a couple of 12" kids bikes. Then she says, there's a free to take away one out back too.

Needs new rubber, truing, and a front derailer adjustment.
May be more bits upon closer inspection, but otherwise seems solid.

Oh and it's covered in sticky substance, maybe tree pitch. Scrubs off with a bit of effort. I bet this cleans up real nice.

Wahoo ! I get to post in this thread !!!

Doohickie, two great bikes there. Have fun fixing them up.

I was thinking of you when I scored that old American Eagle roadster posted a few pages back. It reminded me a lot of your Raleigh Roadster,(although it's not a 3-speed). I picked that one up for $10 bucks, and it's almost ready to ride.

The running gear was removed completely . The frame is faded, scratched and dirty as well as having the watchdog ID # engraved in nasty scratchings rith across the top tube. The decals are still readable, Dunelt, made in england "ride a wheel on Sheffield steel" It has a ding on one of the rear tubes but Its not terrible and repairable if Im going to paint it anyway. Very nice lug work and air pump braze ons. I have all the parts from a girls formost 3 spd I dissassembles for parts. I think it was made by Raliegh so the parts should mix and match. Some nice fenders, but they are blue. Some super nice Dunlop steel rims w/turmey archer 3 spd hub in near mint shape. I wish the paint on this old tub wasnt so harshed up. I think it would make a neat commuter.

Let me ask though, Is this frame rare at all or desired by anyone here before I decide to have it blasted and painted? I did a search on eBay and did not see anything like it at all there.

Ill get a pic for it, I all ready removed the fork as It was all dried up and barely turnable. Gonna give it a clean up and get the fork back on it and go from there.

Let me know if any of you have any info on this bike or have any interest.

OK I see why they tossed it. Bottom is all stripped out. Damn I thjought it was a cool looking frame.
Junk, however the seat is nice and the fork is straight so all is not lost.

It might be salvageable by retapping it to Italian thread. If you're ever in Appleton, look me up.

We sell bottom brackets that have no threads on either side. They are slightly oversized to work in frames with trashed threads.

Oh very cool! I hate to admit how stoopid and green I am but I forgot about the different threads. I think I am the one who screwed it up now, I think I was trying a Jap bottom Bracket. Oh well, I am learning.

Alas, no. French and English are very close to the same diameter, but Italian is slightly larger so the new threads would have some purchase.

I see Platypius has posted that he has threadless BB cartridges avaiable. That's actually probably an easier way to recover this frame.

Don't give up yet!

The Pyramid threadless BBs are available from J&B Importers, so I would think any LBS in your area should be able to get them. 20-25 bucks is the going rate for them. They've saved many frames from going to the landfill.

OK, picked up my first higher end bike today. Deal seemed pretty good, so I went for it. I will look up component codes for date, its a mid 90s Colnago Master Lite, full Ultegra components. I love the paint job. Needs a brake cable replaced, new tires, and a shorter reach stem to fit me.

It's a good thing you need a shorter stem. That is the ugliest stem I've ever seen. It should be outlawed.

The bike is beautiful.

Those Hercules bikes are awesome! I ended up with one in about the same condition and fixed it up for my wife. I dig riding it around too. The powder coater was supposed to do it in a copper color, but wrote down the color code wrong. It ended up in a nice pearly silver so we went with it. The lines of the frame are very different compared to most cruisers.

Almost brezzed over this one from CL the other day. Posting was for "A TREK BIKE" and had this little grainy pic. It was a long drive to see the bike but I had a feeling it might be something special.
Anyone want to take a shot at what it turned out to be?

Dimension = $9.99 in the bargain bin.

That is a GORGEOUS Colnago. I wanted one of those so bad in 1990s when we were selling a lot of them.

You need a classic Cinelli stem for that, or maybe a 3T or ITM. (I sold a Colnago-branded stem on eBay about 3 months ago. Sorry!)

Oh, and get that god-awful Ultegra off of there and put on Chorus or Record like it SHOULD have!
