That Univega is a nice find, I had one but unfortunately, it was too small for me.

Had two good finds this week. The first was the all chrome Katakura Silk, I posted it in another thread, so no reason to repeat those pics.

The second was a thrift store find this afternoon. It has been a LONG time since I found a bike worth picking up at a thrift store. We were driving in town, so I stopped at the large GW that was on the way. My wife spotted a Nishiki racing bike. Turned out to be a 1977 Nishiki International, EXTREMELY dirty, but the bike appears to be in pretty good shape under all the dirt. Typical dirty bike at a thrift store price. This will be my sixth 1970s Nishiki International in the last two years, and the best one as far as build quality and components. Got to love the barcons, those might end up on something else, like the Trek 714 I have in my project queue.

Biopace installed and is working like a charm... I have a dead spot when my left leg tops the pedal stroke and the Biopace feels much smoother and my knee has stopped complaining when I put too much stress on it.

That, and the XT crank was noticeably lighter than the Sugino I swapped out.

I haven’t torqued a wrench in a while, and hadn’t plan to, but this dump find caught my eye as something worth restoring. I couldn’t find a pic on the Miyata catalog site, but I would think late 80’s with the graphics. Miyata On/Off Road runner. It has some unusual features, the one that stands out to me is the chainstay mounted rear brake.

today's catch... from the LBS (GASP)... who knew... 1985 Cannondale SR900. Components don't agree with the 1985 catalog. Agrees partially with the build of the next lower down model the SR 500/600. Mavic derailleurs, rear with both chainwheels broken, front is braze-on, Suntour Superbe cranks/chainrings, Suntour Cyclone hubs and pedals, Suntour shifters... presumably Cyclone, Nisi Mixer 700c rims, Royal Gran Compe brake calipers/levers w/hoods dirty but intact, Cinelli bars/stem, Sugino seatpost, Cinelli Volare suede seat. Watching some replacement Mavic chainwheels for future replacement. LBS was asking $200. When I inquired, they said they would be happy to move it and break even for $180 and I pulled the trigger. I've been on the lookout for old Cannondales. I used to drool over them when I was a kid and shopping for my first real bike. Should be fun to have one.

The owner did a real nice job of upgrading the bike, the components alone are worth more then the $180 you paid. No sure why the owner went with a Mavic rear derailleur, don't know too much about those, maybe made by Simplex or Huret? If the rest of the bike is Suntour and the Mavic rear shifts sloppy then I would look for a Suntour Cyclone rear derailleur on E-bay, their relatively inexpensive on E-Bay and you can find brand new ones yet, but the shifting was the best and they were built to last.

The owner also knew that the best bottom bracket at the time was the Suntour Superbe, it was the stiffest made at the time and lasts a very long long time with maintenance of course.

The Mavic front derailleur isn't a problem, but if ever breaks then look into a Cyclone front.

Probably the shifters are also Mavic, but again that's a part that won't break, but if you want matching components you can find brand new Suntour shifters on E-bay real cheap.

Did you build those steps to display bikes . . . or M1 TANKS!

The Complete Book of Bicycling by Eugene A. Sloane "all-new 4th edition!" (1988) in paperback in very good condition for 25 cents. I still have my hard cover copy of the New Complete Book of Cycling (1974) that I got as a present when I was a kid. The fact that it is 23 years old doesn't bother me, since most of my bikes are even older. This copy is going to be looking pretty dog-earred in no time...if you know what I mean.

I was riding around the neighborhood when a neighbor was wheeling this to the curb. We were the same size people. I went home and got the car to haul it home. Cleaned it up, swapped the cranks, chain and seat and now have a great rider. Put 55 miles on it this week! The look on my neighbors face when i ride by his house with it is priceless! This is an 89 Schwinn Caliente.

Was bone stock when I found this down at the co-op and could not resist... swapped in my coaster wheels and found some fenders to match the gold and black pinstriped Peugeot logo.

Seemed right to keep the rather perfect cottered crank...

i you clean that up a little it would make a great rain bike

That's a fantastic LBS find! Looks like you've got a pretty large one, too.

I've been using an '85 SR900 as my commuter, and absolutely love it, but I got in an accident and forked the fork. It's been replaced, but the rake is longer and makes for a more squirrely ride. I managed to find an '85 ST frame that I'll build up into a commuter with that fork (and post here when I'm done), and I'll probably get a Nashbar carbon fork for the SR to turn it back into a racing ride. Hopefully the shorter rake on the Nashbar fork will help bring the steering back under control.

Yours looks really great, and really well maintained. I've got loads of paint chips on my two frames, but it seems like the previous owners of yours took care of it. Let us know how it rides; I love powering mine through the city.

That "7"-shaped seat post means it's pretty old. Like, 1930's old.

Looks like it has a 3-sp hub, which should tell you something, whether Hercules, Sturmey Archer, or other brand.

Post it again, with better photos, when you have it in hand.

Wow...nice find. I know this is going back aways but I love the classics. I just liberated a 80s something Raleigh Pointe mtn bike (no pics yet). I'm replacing my Road Master because there is on good kickstand mounting where you would usually find, instead its mounted off to the side of the rear tire. I never worked anyway so I just took it off. I'm not sure if you'll be able to see the frame design.

The Dump regurgitates again. One GT Timberline mountain bicycle and a bunch of old Ten Speeds, including a Bianchi Strada...

I have not been hunting much lately, but could not pass this up. It is even my size!
Trek 520 all original and in need of some quality time in my garage.

My husband and I wanted a tandem but didn't want to pay much, one came along, a circa 1964 CCM Mark IV. It's been stripped and soaking in oxalic. Going to rattle can it and add some proper wheels and brakes and cold set the rear and add a few gears. The guy had the poor thing in pieces, it was rideable with a few adjustments. Coaster brakes + tandem = hell no.
