Picked up a way too big Panasonic DX 2000 today. Bought it for the wheels and the bar end shifters, which was all I could make out as useful from the CL pictures. Reality is even better. Ideale leather saddle, Campy record hubs, Shimano 600 cranks, Campy pedals, Campy bar end shifters, wheels are 700c and a nice frame pump. All for $50.
First bike I have ever picked up with butted hi-ten tubing. Wow... -Gene- |
a couple hours volunteering at the Salvation Army store netted me this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=130293661609 Dont know if this will be a bargain (£36 Ebay), but got to be worth it for the Brooks saddle, and other bits and pieces, even if the frame is no good, thought this might be a Dawes Galaxy at first but no chrome on fork, so probably a lesser model, if anyone recognises which one please let me know |
A true "saved from the dump"...I was out on my maiden voyage with my Puch riding around my neighborhood on a beautiful cool spring day....when I found another Puch. This Meteor Luxe Series II was part of a bulk trash pick up and was lying next to a Toro lawn mower (which I may also go get.)...A quick knock on the door, and she's mine.
Dia Compe brakes, Suntour stem shifters, Suntour Seven rear deraileur, heavy Rigida steel rims...:)...even a rear light generator. The tires are like new, as are the brake pads. After I put air in the tires and the chain back on the rear sprocket, it rides and shifts pretty well. I think I've cornered the market on Puches in my neighborhood...:) |
It's been a bit of a long, dry spell here. I kind of forgot about this little gem I scored for free a while ago. I think it may be a little too far gone (see rear wheel), but it's still cool. It needs a dunk in some Oxalic acid I guess :)

I read about this on the Classic and Antique Bicycle Exchange. A guy bought 15+ bikes at a barn sale in upstate New York.

Lost Varsity
Just here looking for commiseration...
Leaving my apartment today, out my 2nd floor back door which faces the alley. Looking down on the alley I saw a junquero truck (Chicago salvage-guy pickup truck trolling alleys for scrap) with, perched on top of a 10-foot-tall pile of scrap, a pretty nice purple Schwinn Varsity with generators and lights. Looked to be about my size, too. By the time I could lock my door and hustle down the stairs (carrying my bike), he was gone. I looked around for a bit to see which way he went, but the trail was cold (and I was going to be late for work). It's at the scrap metal dealer by now. I've been depressed about it all day. Sigh. Give the guy at the scrapyard a tenner for it....works all the time for me.

His wife must have been really happy about that! She's probably consulting with a divorce attorney at this very moment. The funny thing is...in New York...she'll wind up with half of them! :roflmao2: |
My scrap yard guy is $10, unless it's the one I want, then it's $20. At least it's there if I want it.

SR Explorer
I don't know squat about mountain bikes but I stopped in at one of the bike shops I do business with and my favorite mechanic said 'hey Richard, I've been waiting for you to show up, come on back here and look at this.' It was an SR Explorer, he said it was from the early 80's and the owner wanted to sell it. Got a phone number, offered $75 and brought it home this afternoon. Champion tubing, Araya alloy rims, Suntour Mountech front and rear ders, Suntour thumbies, Dia-Compe levers and brakes and a Sugino Super Maxy triple crankset. Now if only the tires will hold some air....

My catch of the day is a Trek 930 mountain bike in pretty much mint condition...nice green finish. The only thing I see that it needs is one new inner tube(presta valve type). Price: $9.75!
That's the kind of deal that keeps me going back for more! |
