Someone left this on one of the railway stations round here and after 14 months, the staff cut it loose and were gonna lob it in the skip so I saved it and brought it home. So far, I've cleaned it up and taken the brakes off to be re cabled since it still had the original blocks and cables in. Needs de rusting, then our lass wants me to re spray it baby blue with white walls....but she'll be lucky!

grabbed this Rockhopper (pretty sure it's an 88) for $40 yesterday for my gf.. it's probably a touch too big but she's complaining about her old one being too small, and also she's ready to move on from a single speed to a geared bike :D

I bought a pair of early '70s Schwinn 3 speeds for not a lot of money. One Breeze, one Speedster, both evidently with low or no miles. The set was missing one front wheel and one front fender. I am in the midst of getting the Speedster back on the road. I might use the Breeze's Sturmey AW on an old rusty Raleigh boom-era road bike that was given to me.

Several things made me go 'hmm'. I'm starting to understand. The Speedster's frame or fork must be tweaked, head tube twisted out of plane..? The front brake arm where the cable attaches was bent. Now I know - the wheel got turned around backwards and under the down tube, when Mr.X came home drunk one night and plowed into it in the garage, or something. The missing wheel and fender was ruined at that time (what fooled me is the Breeze's wheel and fender was installed on this Speedster.) The lower headset cup in the Speedster was loose. I JB-welded it in... D'oh! Should've waited until I knew if it rode straight! One of the fork legs may or may not be bent back or forward, not an easy thing to do with these forged forks.

It seems to track without pulling too bad, but it definitely feels like the weight is off center, steers easier in one direction than the other. I know the trick of pulling the fork legs one way or the other, toward the direction that it wants to turn. Not sure if this is all it needs. I guess with this extra-sturdy (fore-and-aft) fork, there's no risk to trying it.

I just got back from Erie PA, where I picked up this ROSS Singature 292s for a song. Ishiwata EX triple butted tubing, full Shimano Golden Arrow group, no chips in the paint, and only minor decal damage. I've been lusting for one of these for a while, and it's my size! This is the sellers pic; I will start a thread tomorrow with some good pics. I am gonna make this thing shine and then ride the hell out of it...

I was busy picking up another bike yesterday and selling one too, so I was kicking myself when I saw this ad, assuming it was long gone.

Seller had a good ad too, with good pictures.

Typically, another buyer was interested, but he had one of those jumbo requests for more info, more pics, etc. So while he was looking for more info, I was loading up the bike.

These pics were "as found". Its the cleanest bike I have ever picked up. Minor marks on the TT should polish out as paint does not appear to be chipped.

That has to be one of the cleanest "second-hand bikes" I have ever seen. Nice job,

Hi folks. New to the forum and thought I’d share a few here.

It all begins with a garage sale find: a 1988 Nishiki Altron 7000 with a full SunTour Sprint group for $15. It was light and fast, but extremely uncomfortable with a slightly too-small frame. So I parted it out and sold the frame, but kept most of the components.

Many of those parts wound up on this bike: a Sekai Special from the mid ‘70s. One of my students gave me the frame, and I built it up as a 1x8 porteur-ish sort of bike with the Sprint crank and rear derailer, a newish wheelset from another trash-pick (a Fuji Absolute something or other), and a few VO bits and pieces. This is my daily workhorse.

http://i42.tinypic.com/2ai57pt.jpg

Another great find that pre-dates these two is a Stella from the early ‘70s. Not sure which one, definitely not an SX-73 because of its low-end parts. The bike was barely rideable: bent steel rims, a crank that folded up on one of the first test rides, death stem and already bent bars. I built it up as a fixed-gear bike for a few years, but then my aging knees protested too much. So it’s now a Grant-Petersenesque sort of an affair, with its too-big frame, moustache bars with cotton-over-cork tape and Silver/Sprint bar-end shifters, a Sugino XD2 that I’m running as a compact double, and SunTour VX front and rear derailers. It’s wrong in so many ways that it’s right—super comfortable for a not-so-fast century.

http://i42.tinypic.com/a17llc.jpg

Finally, a neighbor recently had this “Godeau” frame with 3ttt stem, Profile bars, Super Record shifters, and 600 rear d out with the trash. The frame is a mystery, with some kind of butted tubing and short Campagnolo dropouts. I need to pull it apart and see what it will take to rehab the frame, but it looks interesting to say the least. Any suggestions? He also had a 1972 Gitane Gran Sport out at the curb with some functional components (Huret Allvit, etc.). Still trying to figure out what to do with that one as well. Fortunately they’re both in my size.

http://i41.tinypic.com/2zq4o40.jpg

Too many others to mention—it’s getting so that I resent buying anything new!

Henry

There is a cycle shop called Godeau in Brussels, Belgium . I ran across it in another search.

My friend's daughter found it at a garage sale and he purchased it for *cough*twentyfivedollars*cough and passed it on to me because he knows how much I like old British bikes... I have never seen a drop bar Phillips here and almost never does one find a bike in such pristine condition.

The reach is far too short and I just happen to have some Raleigh Special bars which should solve that and make the bike look even better.

It didn't.
I circled back past it at least four times before I finally broke down and took it since obviously nobody else was interested.
Got the seat post unstuck yesterday, and my plans include a couple coats of clear to preserve the patina and a poor boy single speed conversion.

Seems like most of these bikes are attributed to Gitane, and I was wondering if the medieval sea horse on the seat tube might be a hint to the builder?

Clear coat won't stop the rusting, in fact will make it look worse as the clear coat bubbles and fogs up over time, and then adds a gloss to it that is fake looking after your done spraying it.

First clean it with a nonabrasive Scotchbrite pad soaked in full strength CLR, then clean with just a wet rag when done, do this twice; the CLR will stop the rusting but only for a short time. Then spray it with Wurth Rust Guard Clear (you may want to call Wurth because for some reason I can't find it, hopefully they haven't stopped making it because that was great stuff, if they don't make it ask them who makes something similar like Eastwood perhaps?), or as an option if the Murth, or some other similar product is not available you can use PPG Deltron Urethane Clear BUT you'll need to add a flattening agent to it to prevent that gloss look that will just make the bike look horrendous. Using a clear scares me a bit, because if you didn't stop the rust the clear will start to look bad in short order. I know there are products out there for this purpose of stopping and sealing the rust from restarting because rat rod owners do this all the time, you just have to find it.

Let me repeat, whatever you do, do not just spray clear coat over it without first stopping the rust, or the clear coat will go from shiny (or flat if you got a flat clear coat) to fogging to a blistered look in a short period of time of a year or two tops, then the only way to get that clear coat off is to strip the entire frame down and you lost the patina at which point of course you'll have to repaint it.

I found the Phillips and AD Pathfinder for free during a rainstorm. The Phillips is about 10th in line for a rebuild!

Checked on CL this afternoon and saw this at a very attractive price, my size. Not sure of the year but must be later with a unicrown fork. Maybe '89 or '90? 7 speed indexed Suntour GPX. All original with the GPX pedals except someone put Sante brake levers on it. That's not so bad. Besides a little grime looks like it was hardly ridden up close.
My e mail to the seller was, "I will buy it. Call me". He did. I did.

I just took in a black Allez on a trade of sort....I like those frames & the 128mm rear spacing is kinda nice in that it easily gives options to go any number of directions with setup. I'm thinking of putting an early 2000s-ish Ultegra 10 group on mine and building it as an all-weather/beater/crit racer of sorts.

I ride an `84 KHS Competition 10-speed, I picked it up as a trade-in at the LBS for $80. The stock components were horrible and the frame is heavier than I would like, but with my height I am extremely limited in finding frames that fit me so it is what it is. If the bike fits you it's worth $100 for sure.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...e/IMG_0052.jpg

I replaced everything easily replaceable to me, 180mm compact double crankset (not in this pic, but it's a sram external bb all black that I found on amazon for ~$80), 9 speed shimano dura-ace groupset, long reach brakes, swapped to 700c wheels (easton ascent front, mavic super pro on dura-ace hub in rear), prime 3t ergo drop bars, etc. It rides like a whole different bike now, easy to maintain 17.5mph avg pace on 100mile rides, if I could get it lighter it would be perfect, but I doubt I could buy a carbon fork to fit the massive headtube on this monster :)

Beautiful bike Blind =) . the seller says the bike is ready to ride, i will try it this friday to see if the bike fits me, i would like to make some mods on it (seat and handlebars) lets see what happens and if i am able to find some other info about the bike =). thanks for your advice

wrk101 07-31-13 08:44 PM

Picked up a couple of basic projects today, a Takara mixte and a Centurion Sport DLX. Both do have cromoly frames, alloy rims, and alloy bars. O.n the other hand, you see turkey levers, steel chain rings, stem shifters.

A lot of bikes moved on this month, so I guess I felt the need to replenish.
