wait till you do take them off and find out where 5 lbs of the bike weight comes from. They are nice though, I have a pair saved up in the rafters. Why I have no idea. They are sized to the frame I believe.

I've swapped Schwinn fenders between different size frames before. I even put fenders off a 27" Collegiate on a 26" Probe MTB...... the tire to fender line on the front was off a little but the rear was perfect.

Was on a sort of working vacation last week, complicated, but have a place I can stow say, a bike or two at relatives down there and ended up buying not one, but two bikes at yard sales on Saturday. First bike was anything but vintage, some otherwise un-noteworthy Wal*Mart "Next Avalon" branded affairs but was a mere ten bucks and the person selling it had already sorted out all of the usual cringe-worthy build issues, but a accident had put a nasty kink in the gear shift cable so it's stuck in a low gear until I can replace said cable.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=527431 But this is clearly not the bicycle that brought me to this site. No, about two hours later that morning I came across this rusty beauty, a Giant Excursion at the super fantastic price of a mere $20... plus the hundred or so it's going to end up costing for replacement parts. :p http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=527432 |
Hey oddjob quick question: how do you use the plastic post/bar thing between the clamps on the left side of your rack? I picked up the same rack at the Salvation Army a while back and can't quite figure out what its purpose is.

Make's Mini look Maxi. Just got this tonight for a friend's 1 year old, who has been walking already for 2 months. Nice for a Jackson portrait.
https://dl.dropbox.com/s/hes283mmsqz...ystic.jpg?dl=0 His parents told me he has a older brother (4 1/2 yrs old ) that also has been riding since he was two & moved up to a 18" tired BMX bike. They told me they never let either one see the bike with the training wheels on & removed them right away. The mom said they got some kind of balance bike that they would ride around in the house and that made the transition to a two wheeler very easy for them. I know some kids that didn't learn how to ride a bike until they were 12 & 13 & even now many yrs later are not that good on a bike. Glenn |

It kind of keeps two bikes from slamming into one another. I suppose if you used a bungee with it, it would do a better job. The only thing I don't like about the rack is that the holders slide a bit too much. I'll probably silicone them in place. |
Alrighty, thanks for the info. I had it doing all sorts of weird things trying to figure out what it did. Sweet bike, too, staged like it's in the "Hot or Not" thread.

This popped up on the local craigslist today for $200. Gonna take some work, but I think it will clean up and be a nice rider. I think for $200 I can live with the '' patina ''.

found it on sidewalk next to the trash.
I stripped it when I brought it back home. It was missing wheels and the rear derrailleur. the rapid fire 9 speed shifters were working to my surprise (notice the sanitation removal sticker) http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=527647 |

Thanks! Chrome is in very good shape, no dents or ripples in tubes. It isn't original, cyclone mech, sugino crank, dura ace brakes... also cinelli bar and stem so I think the fork was replaced?
if the chrome is oxidized a bit simply use a car wash soap (not some soap you have around the house) and water to clean, then rinse with spotless water, dry with a chamois or a microfiber cloth, then clean it up by using Mothers California Gold Chrome Polish which is non abrasive. Don't go ape like rubbing the chrome, just a gentle motion because chrome is not real thick so be gentle. If the oxidation is gone then you need to protect the chrome from damage so simply buy some wheel wax or just use either Mothers car wax or Meguiars car wax as long as it's not a cleaner wax which would be abrasive which you don't want, you want non abrasive wax and put on 2 to 3 coats. The wax can be either natural or synthetic, synthetic holds up longer. Depending on how often you ride the bike will depend on how often you need to reapply the wax but probably twice a year, keep dirt off the chrome by rinsing the chrome down which with the wax protecting dirt should come off fairly easily. Chrome is a big deal to keep clean and waxed but the results is well worth it. YOU have fun with that bike, I bet you're going to get a lot of comments on that one. |

Super find, for a thrift store bike; one in 100,000 at least :thumb: |
You have some small areas with pitting and maybe rusting, you can get that reduced a lot by following this: 4 Easy Ways to Remove Rust from Chrome (with Pictures) Use method 1 first, then if that doesn't work then go to method 2, then if that doesn't work go to method 3. After the chrome is "fixed" then simply follow the polishing and waxing stuff I outlined for you earlier.
On that website on how to treat rusting and pitting they do show the option of painting the area with a chrome spray paint, don't do that unless it's really bad and you want to look good just make sure you mask off the good chrome before you do it. Practice on a piece of PVC pipe or a metal pipe if you have one so you know how fast and thin to put it on so it doesn't run. Several very thin coats is better than trying to lay down a thick one and with round shaped objects the paint can run real fast vs a flat surface. The good news is about 99% of that chrome is in fantastic shape. It looks stunning. |
Thanks for the tips and the kind words!
Not sure, but didn't these bikes have a BMX .833/21.1 quill stem when new? |
Those chrome Voyageurs were clear coated to hold the decals. Otherwise they would have peeled off within a month or less of being sold. Don't use metal polish unless it has been stripped and has modern vinyl decals. It may have a chemical reaction with the clear. A nice light paint polish should work just fine. The one I found was bad enough that I stripped the clear and got replacement decals. I have somewhat been looking for another, since I sold mine 5-6 years ago now. Everybody thinks they're gold now though, and want $300 and up for so/so non original examples.,,,,BD
There was one locally last year, and they wanted $200.. All of the components had fuzzy green corrosion on the steel parts, and the chrome had a whole lot of pitting going on. A clear indication of being stored in a shed or garage, with fertilizer and/or pool chemicals. They were incredulous when I offered $60 for it. And yes, they had an investment cast fork crown that looked like a narrowed mtb style, and the steerer was .833... The crown looked like this.. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-40j_nD2x2A...0/DSC00090.jpg |
And mine, if you care to see it. Thankfully it is still up on the web. It shows as found, and finished with 95% +/- original parts. I had the chrome Super Le Tour 12.2 at the same time.,,,,BD
