Raleigh Sprite BB Question

Hey everybody,

A good friend of mine gave me an almost complete Raleigh Sprite (without the wheels). It's the perfect size for me and I'd like to use it as an city bike. The thing is... The cottered crank was loose and I found out one of the cotters was stripped. With luck (!), I was able to remove the cotter without too much trouble...

Which brings me to my question. What can I do with this setup?? Maybe try to find a new cotter, but they seem few and far up here. Or... Replace the whole BB. Now, I read Sheldon Brown's stuff about the options you have to replace with a modern type BB on these types or Raleigh. Phil Wood is too expensive for the Raleigh and, also, I want to keep the cost low.

Is there ANY other solutions apart from changing the axle (hard to find too), UN72 (hard to find) or tapping some new threads?

If not, I think this frame will have to out with a "To Give" sign on it as it proves to be more complicated than I thought at 1st.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Bikes: old,older.and very old

the easiest and best thing is to get a new cotter.raleigh bb did not use british standars threads and the drive side is not easy to remove. Most just clean it in the frame and replace the barrings.
Try ebay,Harris Cyclery,or at www.oldroads.com
I'm sure a replacement shouldn't be too hard to find---sam
