you know guys......making fun of "Tarck" bikes is getting as old as the bikes themselves.
Just like the these bikes all look the same, I mean I hardly ever check out FGG anymore for that reason......
All these sarcastic jokes about brakes & gears & tight jeans....it's been the same recycled jokes for years now.
And I just don't understand why everyone gets their panties in a wad about people cutting stuff off of the frames THEY own, that's right THEY own these bikes. It's not like they're artifacts, they're bikes. I think many of you would rather see these bikes collecting dust in a basement than be used on the street, backwards stems & all.
I love vintage bikes, & if i find one in good shape, all original, sure I'm happy....but all this nonsense about how you want to cut peoples balls off & "teach them a lesson for ruining that great frame" bla bla bla mob mentality. get over it. enjoy what you have & let others enjoy what they have. Sure it's a good time to poke fun at peoples style choices & whatnot, but actually wanting to hurt them or "crying for that poor frame"? A little overboard IMO.
and....let the backlash begin......

I'm with ya cobra, whether it's the VRC snobbery on MTBR, the fashion slavery on the SSFG forum or the overblown reactions to how people enjoy their rides on this board, bicycle bigotry is weak sauce, and only makes for ****ty atmosphere and needless divisions between people who all enjoy bicycles.
I come here because I enjoy bicycles, and the rest of this is just BS, and reminds me that spending time on forums is a waste of time if it's not positive.
I think I'll go tinker with my Jeunet fixie now...

I think it just goes to show that some people like Skittles more than they like cats. Who am I to judge?
(for the record, I'm glad to see anyone enjoying a bike....it's easy to make some assumptions as to how/why a bike got to be "where" it is, but we really have no idea when all we see is the finished product)

I've seen far too many butchered bikes pass through our shop. The worst was an old Colnago that some moron had spray painted and turned into a fixie. It was spray painted orange, had yellow deep-dish fixie wheels, blue tires, purple MTB handlebar cut down to about 6 inches long, and a yellow Flite saddle.
Most of the ones who have come into the shop admit to not having ridden a bike since they were kids, are building a fixie because their friends have one, and know nothing about the bikes they are destroying.
The most recent example was a Raleigh Professional - I think it was a '76 - the kid had found it at Goodwill, bought it for $20, and promptly stripped the Campy stuff off of it. I asked what he did with the parts (cuz I wanted them).....he threw them away. They weren't "Shimano", so he assumed they were crap.
*sigh*

Jesus it's like a moral crusade with some of you guys. Listen to cobra. Better these bikes are out being ridden than gathering dust inside someone's garage. If a silly color scheme and oddly-configured parts makes the bike more enjoyable for the rider, then so be it (so long as it doesn't endanger them).

It is a matter of style. If it is a true fixed gear track bike, being used on a track, then it isn't a fixie.
But if it is a track bike ridden on the street, it is a fixie. If it is a formerly geared bike, stripped of its components, covered with stickers, and ridden on the street, it is a fixie.
If it is a OEM fixed gear bike but tarted up with top tube pads, deep dish wheels, and spoke cards, it is a fixie.
I could probably think of more but thats all that comes to mind right now.

Last summer, I turned on the tattooed, pierced young gun at LBS to my flip/flop single speed. He was a BMX nut, and decided to give up the little bikes, found mountain bikes boring. A few days ago, I turned him on to the first geared road bike he's ever been on. Now, he has one of each, and is not at all interested in carbon fiber, aluminum, or anything but lugged steel.
Let's see, 6 months ago, no interest. Now, 1 geared, 1 single speed. Neither bike is going to the dumpster.
We win.

cb400bill - A fixed gear bike is a fixed gear bike.
A track bike is a fixed gear.
That is Merckx riding a fixed gear.
Many fg riders do not like the word "fixie" as it is often used in a derogatory manner.
