I paid 220, probably too much, but it was a fun ride and the Davis bike market is pretty good so i figured i could sell it for 200 if i got tired of it and i'd only be out 30 bucks (20 dollar difference and 10 dollars gas to pick it up)

well, that's until i flipped the bike over to oil the chain, and i notice the serial number is missing. not that it wasn't stamped on, but that someone decided to chisel or grind it out... I didn't think to look for this while buying because frankly I wasn't expecting to need to, and i was more concerned about making sure all of the parts were working fine and dandy.

it doesn't seem to be structurally unsound, and that bit of rust seems to be just on the surface. i plan on scratching the rust off with a wire brush and brushing some clear nail polish over it tomorrow to protect it.

so i guess my question is if anybody has an idea as to why somebody would do this? is it stolen goods? is the resale value now totally killed?

oh, and i'm working on finding a new saddle, i know this one is as hideous as it is uncomfortable. every minute on that saddle makes it feel like i'm getting punched in the taint.

They could have at least punched in some fake numerals over the old ones.. can't even get good quality crooks these days. Looks like it was done with a drill bit.

aw crap, the guy i bought it from has a business license and business cards (https://sacramento.citysearch.com/pro...e_bicycle.html <-business listing)

granted the guy runs it out of his house... and he basically has nothing but bikes in his house (his kitchen was full of frames, cranksets, and bottom brackets, there was little walking room overall because he had to have ~70 bikes stashed everywhere). I asked where he got them from and he said swap meets and unclaimed property auctions or something...

i doubt the original owner is really still looking for it... but this will make it a bit harder to sell i imagine guess it'll just get parted out when i get tired of it (as if people are looking for 24" wheels and biopace cranksets lol)

If it was my bike id still be looking for it, ill always be looking out for mine..

I can't really get any depth perception from the pic, but it looks to me that if it was the SN, it's might close to the weld.
Not every brand of bike has the SN stamped on the BB. You might also look on a chain stay, seat tube or the head tube.

The M might just be a factory part reference for assembly purposes?

hmm, i looked and didn't see any other stampings... I'll take a closer look when i'm working on it. i think i gotta replace the cables on it anyways
