Circa 1989 Olmo

So, I'm buying a Schwinn Traveler last night, and the seller says, I also have an Italian bike if you're interested....and pulls out a green and white Olmo. It looks very sleek, especially sitting next to the Schwinn. Spur of the moment decisions never seem to work out for me, and I think the frame may be a little big, but, I strike a package deal for both and go on my way.

I know a little about Schwinns, but I don't know anything about Olmos. I'm guessing this one is a circa 1989 model, as it has a gold 50th anniversary sticker on the top of the downtube (1939-1989). No model name on the frame anywhere. I was hoping for Campy equipment...but no such luck. I'm guessing this is one of their lower end models.

It features a lugged frame - Oria tubing
Shimano 105 crank
Shimano 600 hubs, front and rear brakes, front and rear derailleur
Wolber GTA 2 Gentleman 700c rims
Wellgo pedals
Pave saddle
Soxte (? - the script is difficult to read) headset)

Overall, the bike is in nice shape, some minor scrapes here and there, but nothing serious....I think it will look really good after a through cleaning. I've searched for info regarding Olmos...but really haven't come up with anything, especially info from the late 80s. Any info would be appreciated!

Pics will be posted soon...thank you!

I don't know that it is a lower model just because it has those components on it, many racers back in the '80s had a mix of all sorts of things. Campy would have been nice but at least those are not throw away Shimano parts. The 600 stuff would have been for a "money-minded" racer back in the day.

Geez, that is a sweet looking bike, any tubing stickers? Depending on what you paid, that is quite the score, especially considering how you came upon it.

It has a tubing sticker that says Oria - Hi Tensile...which is why I was thinking it might be a lower-end frame...that said, it's pretty light.

Oria is pretty good tubing, surprised that it says "Hi Tensile".

What the H E double toothpicks. Youre buying a stinky traveler and the guy just so happens to have an Olmo too. Theyre stolen for sure. Just no way that happens.

Dump the Traveler. Polish up the Olmo.

Ha.... His basement was unreal...he had old Schwinn Krates and Pea Pickers, etc...a couple of other Schwinns...his pride and joy bike is a Panasonic DX 1000 (or something like that)...I honestly think he saw this Olmo somewhere and picked it up...I don't think he ever even rode it, it's was just hanging in his basement.

Oria Hi-Ten is straight gauge tubeset at 0.8 mm thickness for TT, DT, and ST, 0.85 mm for CT and ST, and 1 mm for HT. Tubeset is rated at 2230g. In comparison to Columbus, it is in line with Columbus Aelle. I believe Oria later changed name of this tubeset to "TT 0.8".

I think this is the info you were looking for.

Get rid of those stupid leaner bars.

Those things lead to triathlism.

Good score.
