bar tape question

next step in cleaning up my old trek 560 is replacing the handlebar tape. i picked up some yellow bar tape at the lbs but it's kind of foamy and bright neonish yellow, i prefer the more orangey golden yellow tape that was on it and it's more like leather with the grain and perforation. i assume it's not leather but a synthetic of some sort, anybody know what specifically i should look for?

85 trek 560, purple with yellow everything.

Thanks, but I shouldn't be. I'm a rider, not a collector, and most everyone else here is more knowledgeable.

I definitely love that Ambrosio ribbon tape. If you're looking for something more orangey, though, it's gonna be a bright, bright yellow.

No two ways about it - it certainly is bright yellow!

Why am I not surprised you have a bike wrapped in that?

Bikes: specialized crossroads hybrid 2006 Raleigh Cadent 2 1971 Schwinn Varsity, 1972 Schwinn Continental, 1977 Schwinn Volare (frame)

Once it gets used a bit it won't be nearly as bright. BBM that looks pretty blingy

Had. I HAD a bike wrapped in that. At some point or other I've used about every color/type of bar tape known to man - especially the Ambrosio. And I have archived pictures of most of them.

That particular bike was a nicely built, if a bit pedestrian, Novara road bike that I moved along last summer to a grateful little co-ed.

For the sake of completeness, here's the red, white and blue of the Ambrosio line:

Whoops, to the OP, since nobody has described the Ambrosio tape... It's vinyl covering a thin foam. A bit grainy, looks almost like leather, great grip, doesn't tear easily, just enough padding without getting bulky. Not sure about its grip in wet weather, though.

@bbm, any idea what the Ambrosio "yellow/black" or "white/pink" combos look like? I think I saw them sold at Ribbles but I wasn't sure of their appearance.

thanks, i ordered it from probike last night, looks like just what i'm looking for. and it's not too bright for me, its pretty close to what the bike came with. the bbb stuff i got was like... nuclear yellow. almost neon.

hopefully the set of cable housings i ordered is in the same range as this tape.

It sounds like a good choice for an older roadbike, and looks just like what was on my Fuji when I found it. Anybody in the US selling it, or did you order it from Great Britain?

No, it does not. For under $3 shipped, you'd think they would have silver Cinelli plugs included.

Now that was funny...

Hmm now you got me thinking if I wanna go down this path and replace my yellow Benotto tape... I love the look of the Benotto but its not so comfortable.

Bikes: 80's. hoarder.

Here's bike ribbon yellow for reference. Not too cushy, has the leather like grain, and cleans up really easily.
