numbskull of the day

hey! Am I the only one who misses numbskull of the day? That was the first place I would check when coming on the forum. It made me laugh and feel somewhat smart.Does anyone know why it is gone?

Yeah, when I first heard it was done, I was a little bothered by it. But then I got to thinking about it, and realized that most of the recent things just weren't all that funny. Some were, but most were a stretch.
I'll miss the good, funny ones. But I won't miss most of it. I guess, in an economy like this people finally caught on to how to sell things in an educated, thoughtful way. Or maybe we just got bored.

I don't believe that the thread wore out its welcome. I think that lately there have been some things linked that weren't in the spirit of the thread's original purpose.

But that isn't much different than it was a year or two ago. There may have been more chaff in the numbskull thread lately, but there will still be numbskulls posting on CL and eBay. I guess when they do, we won't all be able to share.

Bikes: Mostly English - predominantly Raleighs

I'm not certain whether "numbskull" is taking a semester off, or whether it dropped out for good. We weren't able to find anyone willing to extend it sufficient credit to finish out the Spring '09 session though. The decision was obviously not unanimous, but it seemed to have morphed into something more akin to: "hey - is this right?" over the past year.

There's no reason why individual threads can't be started whenever something spectacularly ignorant is found.

I think the forum will be full of new threads where before they were all confined to one sticky and not taking up valuable space.

Time will tell if the fad will ultimately die off, or whether popular demand might force consideration of re-opening NoTD. It's the mod's decision.

Bikes: Trek Fuji 1980's

Cyclofiend Website

I only ever glanced occasionally at the Numbskull thread and I (hope) that this post falls into that general category. Came across this Cyclofiend (not Cyclofriend) website to access a picture of a very pretty Daccordi bike. Looking under Trek in the manufacturer's section, I came across this ghastly beast!

Me either, but that frame-geometry is awfully weird.

The weird bit is the location of the canti's. Come to think of it, I think that's a Trek MTB frame with 650's on it.

EDIT:
Bingo. https://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2006/cc...rlson0706.html

I still wouldn't call it a Numbskull. Reminds me more of the SS/FG Jackass Tarck Fixie Poseur Conversion thread. Numbskull was supposed to be about sellers with inflated perceptions of value.

The guy in Newtown who's selling the Giant Iguana bike for $150 originally listed it for $1. Evidently he got a number of responses to that. So what's he do? He insults the people responding and makes a special post on CL just to tell everyone how stupid they are:

Who sells a bike for 1 dollar.... Nobody does...So why get mad at the seller just because you are to Stupid to realize this ..When it Says email for info..

Who lists a bike for 1 dollar? Nobody does. So why get upset when people respond to your $1 ad because you were too stupid to post the real price? Instead you insult those who respond, and act like a major *****hole who refuses to acknowledge his own error. Moreover, you made everyone go to the trouble of sending an email and waiting for a response just to find out what the real price is. Yeah, that's a great way to do business. And you call other people stupid? LOL. At least you edited your ad for your Giant Iguana to feature the real price after you realized how dumb it was originally. Now you just need to find someone willing to buy a bike from you after all your insults.

Apologies ... my first post was not clear! The "nice" Daccordi can be found by following this link:

As for the sort-of-Trek-maybe thing ... Words fail me!

Those wheels have to be 700C's. They have Rivendell Rol_y Pol_y or Ruffy Tuffy tires on them. Which only come in 700C.

Present supply is obviously not an indicator. From the owner's text:

"Tomorrow I may be riding for the first time my 1985 Trek 850 mountain bike converted to 650B. From my LBS I purchased Nifty Swifty tires. These tires are mounted on a pair of Weinmann 2120 36-hole 650B rims. The hubs are a pair of Campy Hi flange which were originally spaced for 120 mm rear end. A spacer was added on the right side. The 120mm axle is still there, but a 135mm quick release lever holds the wheel in the 126mm rear end."
